Lampard, on the other hand, said that no contract talks with Chelsea would be reached until the 2014 World Cup, with a tweet that "he will consult with Chelsea before deciding on a transfer elsewhere." Chelsea announced that Lampard would leave the club on June 3rd.

Lampard, a free agent, has signed a two-year contract with New York City FC as a free agent ahead of the 2015 MLS season. It was revealed at a live press conference in Brooklyn that he would join the club, which would play in Major League Soccer (MLS) for the 2015 season. Claudio Reyna, the sport's chief, praised him as "one of the world's best players." Lampard will join the club in a six-month contract, according to the city's parent club, Manchester City, on August 3, 2014. Lampard had signed a short-term deal with the club as a free agent with no commitment to start until the end of his stay in Manchester, although initially stated as a loan. Lampard's deal with Manchester City ended before the English season, leaving him without a single MLS player after his arrival date in MLS was uncertain.

Lampard's stay in Manchester sparked outrage among New York supporters, with New York City being accused of dishonesty for using the player in their promotional material and MLS Commissioner Don Garber being accused of poor leadership and a lack of transparency in handling the case. Lampard's stay at Manchester City could be extended to a second season, according to Manchester City head coach Manuel Pellegrini on January 1, 2015. Lampard did not sign a two-year deal with New York City, but rather signed a non-binding "commitment" to join the team on January 9th. Lampard revealed on the same day that he wanted to move to New York City at the end of the 2014–15 Premier League season. In reaction to the incident, around 300 people requested season ticket refunds, while the 2015 MLS SuperDraft screamed "Where's Frank Lampard?" The crowd erupted.

Lampard made his Manchester City debut against Arsenal on September 13th; he was issued a yellow card and was suspended at halftime for Samir Nasri. He scored his first goal for the club against former Chelsea on September 21 with a volley from inside the box against former Chelsea, despite only being on the field for seven minutes as a replacement. Chelsea's undefeated streak began earlier this season, but the goal was not a victory he celebrated, and he referred to it as a difficult day. In Lampard's first League Cup match for City three days later, he scored the first and last goals as the team defeated Sheffield Wednesday 7–0 at home. Lampard scored another goal in four matches, his fourth in a row, and his fourth this week. In Manchester City's 1–1 draw with Roma on September 30, he made his first Champions League appearance.

Lampard scored the winner for City in a Premier League match against Sunderland on January 1, 2015. Lampard made his 600th Premier League appearance on Sunday, becoming the second player to do so after Ryan Giggs' retirement as a substitute during City's 1–0 loss to Burnley. Lampard captained Manchester City in their last match of the season and the last of his time with the club on May 24. In an eventual 2–0 victory over Southampton at the City of Manchester Stadium, he scored his 177th Premier League goal to put City up on a 2-0 victory. Jes Navas was substituted in the 77th minute.

Lampard signed a pre-contract to play for New York City FC in MLS, which begins on January 10, 2015. In a 3–2 loss to the Montreal Impact at Yankee Stadium, Andrew Jacobson didn't make his debut until August 1st-minute replacement for him. Lampard was one of the 22 players selected to the 2015 MLS All-Star Game roster in July. When his team defeated Toronto 2–0 on September 16th, he scored his first MLS goal and snapped an eight-game losing streak. Lampard scored the first goal in a 2–1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 29th minute of play; he was later fouled in the area during the final minute of stoppage time, which allowed David Villa to convert the match-winning goal from the resulting penalty. In a 2–1 away loss to Washington, D.C. United, he scored New York City's fastest ever goal in MLS history on October 2nd. The team completed its debut season outside of a qualifying role for the MLS Cup Playoffs, angering some in the media who wanted more from the club's trio of named players made up of former Champions League winners Lampard, David Villa, and Andrea Pirlo.

Lampard made his first appearance in 2016 in the New York derby, winning by 7–0, while Lampard was mocked by his team's own supporters. However, he scored in his first game of the season against the Philadelphia Union on June 18th, and New York fans applauded him once more. He made it back-to-back goals against the Seattle Sounders on June 20 in his second appearance. In a 3–1 loss on July 11, his fourth goal in five matches came against Sporting Kansas City. Lampard's goal total for the season hit five with his third goal in a 3–1 win over the Montreal Impact on July 17th.

Lampard became the first New York City player to score a hat-trick in a 5–1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on July 31, 2016. Lampard played in 19 appearances for the second time in his career as New York City finished in second place in the Eastern Conference and qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs for the first time ever, securing a spot in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. As New York was barred from the Playoffs 7–0 on aggregate, he appeared in both legs of the Conference semi-final against Toronto. Lampard will leave as soon as his contract came to an end on November 14, 2016, New York City.

After turning down several bids, Lampard announced his resignation on February 2nd, 2017 and said he'd like to get his coaching certification after retiring.

International career

Lampard was captained by England at youth level before making his under-21 debut in a match against Greece on November 13, 1997. He played for the under-21 team from November 1997 to June 2000, scoring nine goals in 19 appearances, a record that was only bettered by Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers. In a 2–1 home loss to Chile on February 10, 1998, he was captained by England B, who was playing in a 2–1 home loss to Chile.

Lampard scored his first goal for England on October 10th, 1999 in a 2–1 friendly victory over Belgium, and on August 20, 2003, when the team defeated Croatia 3–1. He was on the team at the FA Summer Tournament (Manchester), 2004, which England defeated.

He was disqualified for Euro 2000 and the 2002 World Cup, and he had to wait until Euro 2004 to participate in his first international competition. Lampard scored three goals in four matches, putting them into the quarter-finals. In the group stages, he scored against France and Croatia, and in the quarter-finals he equalized for England against Portugal in the 112th minute, bringing the scoreline to 2–2 but England lost on penalties. He was chosen by UEFA to be in the tournament's squad.

Following Paul Scholes' retirement, he was voted England Player of the Year by fans in 2004 and 2005. With five goals, he was England's top scorer in their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign. In the qualifiers, he scored two vital goals, the first against Austria in a 1–0 win and the second against Poland in a 1–0 victory.

Lampard was named man of the match in England's first game of the tournament against Paraguay, as England defeated Paraguay 11-0. Despite playing every minute of England's 2006 World Cup games, Lampard lost on penalties, and he was one of the three England players whose penalty was saved alongside Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher.

He scored in a 2–1 loss to Germany in a friendly at the new Wembley Stadium in 2007. He was extremely disappointed in qualifying for Euro 2008, when he was very dissatisfied. When arriving as a second-half replacement during England's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia on October 13, 2007, he was booed by England supporters. Lampard sent Stipe Pletikosa the wrong way off the field and finished with just one goal (in a 3–2 loss to Croatia on November 21) as England failed to qualify for the tournament. In a 4–0 victory over Slovakia in March 2009, he scored his first international goal in two years, as well as a second for Wayne Rooney. At Wembley Stadium, Lampard's goal was the 500th England goal scored. Lampard won by 22.5 percent over Croatia on September 9, 2009, securing their spot in the 2010 World Cup for the first time.

Lampard had a first-half shot at goal against Germany in the 2010 FIFA World Cup's round-of-16 match, and television replays were clearly seen to cross the goal line. It would have tied the game 2–2. However, neither the referee nor the linesman saw it as a target, and play was continuing. Lampard struck the cross-bar in the second half with a 30-yard free-kick. Germany won by 4–1 over the tournament's last round, effectively leaving England out of the tournament.

Lampard had already set a record of making 37 shots on target in a World Cup tournament without scoring, more than any other player since 1966.

After both Rio Ferdinand and Steven Gerrard were out of action due to injury, Lampard will cap the national team against Denmark in a friendly played the next day. Lampard scored two goals for England in the Euro 2012 qualifiers, both penalties. The first game was won by Wales in a 2–0 victory, and the second was drawn in a 2–2 draw against Switzerland. Lampard led England to a 1–0 friendly win over new World Champions Spain in November 2011, the first goal for whom he was scoring. He was disqualified from the Euro 2012 trial due to a thigh injury on May 31, 2012. Jordan Henderson was then brought back to him.

Lampard will captain the Three Lions in their forthcoming friendly against Italy on August 14, which England defeated 2–1. Lampard played in England's first game in qualification and starred as England defeated Moldova 5–0, with Lampard scoring his 24th and 25th England goals. After Steven Gerrard was fired after being substituted, he scored England's 100th goal and his second was a header from a cross from Glen Johnson. In a 0–8 victory over San Marino on Sunday, he overtook him as England's highest scoring midfielder after scoring his 28th international goal. Lampard was the eighth England player to earn his 100th cap, winning his cap in a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on September 10th.

Lampard was named in the 23-man England squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on May 12, 2014, a week later he was named vice-captain. Lampard captained his England side to draw with Costa Rica 0–0 on June 24th, his last game of the group stage. Lampard announced on August 26, 2014 that he had retired from international football. He has played in 106 caps, scoring 29 goals.

Managerial career

Lampard was appointed as the manager of Derby County in Derby County on a three-year deal on May 31, 2018. Tom Lawrence was the winner of Derby at Reading's first game in charge, with a 2–1 away victory. In his second game as a manager, he lost in a 4–1 loss to Leeds United on August 11th. Lampard's Derby County shocked Manchester United's Manchester United out of the EFL Cup on penalties after a 2–2 draw at Old Trafford in just his 12th game as a manager.

Lampard was furious of Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa after reports broke in the media that a man was spotted the previous day outside the Derby training ground, leading Leeds' lead in the Championship table. Leeds United released a statement in reaction to the incident on January 12th. Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham Hotspur manager, described the situation as "not a big deal" and "not a commonplace in Argentina."

Lampard led Derby to the Championship play-offs after the club finished sixth in the 2018-19 Championship season. Derby overturned a 0–1 home loss to win 4–2 away against Leeds United in the semi-finals of the play-offs and tie the tie 4–3 on aggregate, setting up a match against Aston Villa in the final. Derby defeated Aston Villa 2–1 in the play-off final.

Lampard had been heavily linked with the vacant managerial job at former Chelsea until the end of the season. Derby granted Lampard permission on June 25th to hold talks with Chelsea bosses over the position.

Lampard was appointed as the new head coach of Chelsea on a three-year deal, making him the first English manager to lead the team in over two decades. The club lost 4–0 to Manchester United in Lampard's first competitive game with Chelsea on the first day of the 2019-20 Premier League. It was the biggest loss for a Chelsea manager in their first game since Danny Blanchflower's side was defeated 7–2 by Middlesbrough in December 1978. In Lampard's second competitive game, they lost on penalties to Liverpool in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup.

Lampard won his first Premier League victory as Chelsea manager on August 24, defeating Norwich City 2–3 away from home. Chelsea won their first home victory under Lampard's rule, defeating Grimsby Town 7-1 in the EFL Cup on September 25th. Lampard's matchday squad against Grimsby featured ten academy graduates, including Reece James and Billy Gilmour, who made their first-team debuts. Chelsea won Premier League Manager of the Month for October 2019, after Chelsea posted a perfect run in the league for the month. After Gareth Southgate and Stuart Pearce, he became the third manager to win Premier League Player of the Month and Manager of the Month by doing so. Chelsea eventually made it to 4th in the Premier League and the FA Cup Final, where they lost to Arsenal.

Chelsea made five major acquisitions in the summer transfer window, including Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, and Édouard Mendy. Chelsea's season got off to a good start in early December, with the Champions League group and the Premier League leading the way. Chelsea won in eight Premier League matches, but Lampard was dropped to ninth, and Lampard was dismissed on January 25, 2021. Chelsea's dismissal came just 24 hours after Chelsea's 3–1 victory over Luton Town in the FA Cup. Thomas Tuchel, the German coach, was named as his replacement on January 26th.

Lampard's departure was also influenced by differences with the club's transfer policy; Lampard is said to have ordered the acquisitions of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Declan Rice, and James Tarkowski, but Chelsea's co-director Marina Granovskaia prevented these attempts. Lampard has also fallen out with or had limited contact with some players, causing former teammate and club advisor Petr et al to be required to act as an intermediary.

Lampard was appointed manager of Everton in the Premier League for a year after losing Rafael Bentez due to poor results. The club was ranked in 16th place at the time of his appointment, four points above the relegation zone. Everton was guided by Lampard to Premier League safety on 19 May Lampard in the 2021-22 season, retaining their 68-year top flight status. Dele Alli, who had been 2–0 down at halftime to Crystal Palace Lampard, took on Dele Alli and fought in a more attacking style, resulting in a 3–2 victory for the Merseyside team. Lampard called the evening "one of the best nights of my career."

Ideally my national team would be led by an English manager, writes DANNY MURPHY - But we don't have elite trophy-winning coaches

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 19, 2024
I won my nine England caps under Sven-Goran Eriksson and became open-minded working with him - and Gerard Houllier at Liverpool - so understand the Thomas Tuchel appointment. He has the right tools and a better CV than the English candidates. Ideally, my national team would be led by an English manager, but we don't have elite trophy-winning coaches and it wouldn't be right to shoehorn in someone merely because they are homegrown. Man-management is a big part of the international game, particularly communicating with stars you might have to leave out.
