Francesca Schiavone (born 23 June 1980, in Milan) is a retired Italian tennis player.

She turned professional in 1998 and won the 2010 French Open singles title, becoming the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam event in singles.

She was also runner-up at the 2011 French Open.

Her career-high ranking is world No. 4, achieved on 31 January 2011.

To date, Schiavone is the last one-handed-backhand player to win a Grand Slam title on the women's tour.She won eight WTA singles titles in total, including Roland Garros.

In doubles, her career-high ranking is world No. 8, peaking with an appearance in the final of the 2008 French Open.

Furthermore, she helped Italy to win the Fed Cup in 2006, 2009 and 2010, and has the most wins for the Italian team. Schiavone played in the longest ever women's singles match at a Grand Slam tournament, when she defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 6–4, 1–6, 16–14 in the fourth round of the 2011 Australian Open women's singles draw, the match lasted 4 hours and 44 minutes and in the process secured her first and only quarterfinal at the Australian Open.On 5 September 2018, Schiavone announced her retirement from tennis at the US Open.

Professional career

Schiavone won eight singles titles on the WTA Tour and also achieved eleven runner-up spots, eight of which have been since 2005. She lost her first eight finals over her career before winning her first title in July 2007. In the 2006 Fed Cup final, Mara Santangelo, Flavia Pennetta, and Roberta Vinci, her Italian colleagues, defeated the Belgian team 3–2. Justine Henin had to leave early in her fifth and final match due to a right knee injury, which helped Italy win their first Fed Cup trophy. This was a doubles match between Kirsten Flipkens and Henin, and Schiavone partnered Schiavone. She won the Fed Cup with Italy for the second time against the United States in 2009, and she also reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time. Schiavone, Italy, won the Fed Cup for the third time in 2010.

In addition, she earned a major win in the 2008 Dubai Open quarterfinals, where she defeated world No. 1 in the world No. 89. Henin, the one-time champion, defeated Henin 7–6, 7–6. In 2006, she defeated Amélie Mauresmo in a Fed Cup tie, when Mauresmo was ranked No. 1. 1.

Francesca defeated Frenchwomen Alizé Cornet 0–6, 6–0, and Julie Coin 6–4, 6–4, first, before tying No. 0 at the Australian Open. Agnieszka Radwa, the 10 seed, received 6–2, 6–2. Despite having her best results there (round four), she went on to lose to No. Venus Williams, a 6 seed, after winning the first set, 6–3, 2–6, 1–6.

She won her third WTA title at the Barcelona Ladies Open after beating Alberta Brianti, Tathiana Garbin, Carla Suárez Navarro, Yaroslava Shvedova, and Roberta Vinci in straight sets.

Schiavone, who was seeded 17th in the French Open, was barely considered a contender for the title. Maria Kirilenko, the 11th seed Li Na, and 30th seed Maria Kirilenko advanced to her first French Open quarterfinal since 2001 (where she had lost to Martina Hingis). The French Open semifinals featured four players (Jelena Jankovi, Elena Dementieva, Samantha Stosur, and Schiavone) who had never competed in a Grand Slam singles event, but Peter Smith, ESPN's tennis commentary staff, and Brad Gilbert picked out Schiavone as the only one in the tennis community, with Maria Joe Fernández, Patrick McEnroe and Brad Gilbert as the only one of the tournament's top players to win the title, Schiavone defeated the world No. 1 in the semifinals. Dementieva, a fifth and 2004 finalist, made Schiavone the first Italian woman to advance to a Grand Slam final and promised that she would become a top-ten player for the first time following the tournament.

Schiavone defeated Stosur in the final of their first-round match at the 2009 French Open, where Stosur had defeated comfortably (6–4, 6–2). Because of this previous success and Stosur's victories over four-time French Open champion Justine Henin, the world No. 1 is the best in the world, as a result. Serena Williams and the world No. 1 are the world's No. 1. Stosur was a strong favorite going into the final and defeated 4 Jankovi en route to the final. After Nicola Pietrangeli and Adriano Panatta, the victory made her her third Italian player to win a Grand Slam singles event. She also became the first woman to win a first Grand Slam title in the Open Era, beating the previous record by Jana Novotná. After Flavia Pennetta's debut as world No. 6 in the world rankings on June 7, she became the top-ranked Italian woman ever after she reached the world No. 6 on June 7th. Schiavone's next event was Eastbourne, where she lost in the first round to Sorana Cîrstea, 5–7, 3–6. She fell to Vera Dushevina in the first round, 5–7, 1–6, as the fifth seed at Wimbledon.

Schiavone reached the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup, where she defeated top seed Caroline Wozniacki. She was the sixth seed at the US Open, defeating Ayumi Morita, Maria Elena Camerin, 29th seed Alona Bondarenko, and 20th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova for the first time since 2003 (where she had lost to Jennifer Carrington). Schiavone qualified in the Pan Pacific Open semifinals, defeating seventh seed Elena Demasieva as the fifth seed. Schiavone competed in the round-robin stage for the first time in her career, but was disqualified in the season's finals. She defeated Caroline Wozniacki in three sets and Sam Stosur in two sets before defeating Elena Dementieva in what would be Dementieva's last match in her career.

Schiavone debuted in the Hopman Cup in Italy earlier this year. Laura Robson defeated Laura Robson in singles, but Bethanie Mattek-Sands lost to Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Schiavone suffered a fractured ankle against Kristina Mladenovic, who was forced to leave early.

Schiavone won for the first time in her career over 23rd-seeded and two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, seeded sixth at the Australian Open, for the first time in her career. Schiavone saved six match points before losing 6–6, 16–14. The fourth-round match lasted almost five hours (4:44; 47 games in total), and Schiavone lost six match points before eventually winning 6–4, 1–6, 16–14. Schiavone climbed to world No. 1 with this victory. 4 after the tournament, the highest ranking ever achieved by an Italian woman, a new record was set, with a 4.0 percent increase over 4 years ago. In the quarterfinals against the world No. 1 ranked the world No. 1. Caroline Wozniacki, Schiavone, was a set and 3–1 up in the second set, but Wozniacki broke twice in the same set and twice in the third, losing 6–6, 3–6 after losing three match points.

Schiavone was seeded third at the Dubai Tennis Championships, but she fell in the round of 16 to Kuznetsova. She lost in the round of 16 to Peng Shuai at the Qatar Open in Doha. Jelena Dokic, the Malaysian Open finalists, was then defeated by her sister Jelena Dokic. Schiavone progressed to the round of 16 at the Indian Wells Open, losing to Shahar Pe'er. She finished fifth at the Miami Open, losing to Agnieszka Radwaska in the round of 16.

Schiavone began her clay-court season with a loss of 16 points to Radwa'ska at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She then progressed to Mattek-Sands in the round of 16 at the Madrid Open, defeating Mattek-Sands. Schiavone defeated world No. 1 in Madrid after Madrid, Italy's quarterfinals, winning to the world No. 2. Sam Stosur, 7, is competing in a rematch of the 2010 French Open finals. She then dropped to world No. 94. During the semifinals of the Brussels Open, Caroline Wozniacki defeated in three sets, the first tournament before the French Open.

Schiavone was the fifth seed and defending champion of the French Open. She defeated Melanie Oudin, Vesna Dolonts, 29th seed Peng Shuai, 14th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and 11th seed Marion Bartoli to progress to the final, where she lost to Li Na, 4–6, 6–7.

She then moved to the grass courts, losing to Agnieszka Radwa in her first Wimbledon warmup at the Eastbourne International. She was the sixth seed in the Wimbledon Championships but she lost in the third round to Tamira Paszek of Austria.

Schiavone won her first-round match against Ekaterina Makarova in the Canadian Open but lost in the third round to Lucie afová.

Schiavone lost in the early rounds of the Western & Southern Open. Maria Kirilenko defeated her in three sets in her first round match. She then fell to former world No. 1. In a third round three-setter, Jelena Jankovia is the top seed in a new round three-setter.

Schiavone's clay-court season was a chance for her to return to form on her favorite surface, but she lost to Olga Govorstova, 4–6, 3–6 in her first match. She represented Italy in the Fed Cup semifinals against the Czech Republic, losing both of her matches to Lucie afá, 6–7, 1–6, and Petra Kvitová, 6–7. Italy lost the tie 1–4. She lost in the second round after defeating Monica Niculescu in the first round. Petra Kvitová, a 3 seed, 2–6, 2–6. Varvara Lepchenko and Rome lost her opener in Madrid to Ekaterina Makarova. Schiavone found some form in the French Open by defeating Sloane Stephens and Alizé Cornet in the semifinals and finals, respectively.

Schiavone advanced to the third round of the French Open, where she lost to Varvara Lepchenko, 6–3, 6-8.

She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon before losing in three sets to Petra Kvitová, but she and her partner Flavia Pennetta advanced to the semifinals. Schaivone won her first match at the Olympics but Vera Zvonareva took her second round, ending in a tumultuous finish.

Schiavone was seeded 22nd in the first round of the US Open and lost in straight sets to Sloane Stephens. Schiavone later competed at the Pan Pacific Open, defeating Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round but losing to Sam Stosur. She lost three straight first-round matches to Li Na at Beijing, to Olga Puchkova at Osaka and to Urszula Radwa at Moscow.
