Florence Stanley Career

Early life and career

Florence Schwartz was born in Chicago, Illinois, on July 1, 1924, the niece of Hanna (née Weil) and Jack Schwartz. She began working in theatre, film, and television as a child in the 1940s. The Importance of Being Earnest with the Touring Players, Bury The Dead at the Cherry Lane Theatre in New York, and Machinal were among her early dramatic appearances. At some point in her career, she began using the stage name Florence Stanley.

Stanley appeared on many live television shows and gave an acclaimed appearance as Clytemnestra in the 1964 New York Shakespeare Festival's production of Electra, opposite Lee Grant who played the title role. Stanley began her Broadway career as Maureen Stapleton's understudy in a 1965 revival of The Glass Menagerie.

She took over the role of Yente in Broadway's Fiddler On The Roof from Bea Arthur, retiring in 1971 (after more than 2,000 performances) to open in Neil Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue, directed by Mike Nichols. She debuted in 1972 as a tap dancer in The Secret Affairs Of Mildred Wild on Broadway, and then in 1981, she returned to work for Neil Simon in the Broadway production of Fools.
