Emo Philips (born February 7, 1956) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, voice actor, writer and producer.
His stand-up comedy persona makes use of paraprosdokians spoken in a wandering falsetto tone of voice.
The confused, childlike delivery of his material produces the intended comic timing in a manner invoking the "wisdom of children" or the idiot savant.
Career
Emo Philips' character is well-known for his unique appearance and on-stage antics, as a fidget, possibly psychotic, agitated, curious, but highly intelligent individual with a penchant for coles laws. Philips is bouncing from chair to stand on stage, wearing his hair or clothes, or going so far as to partially unload punchlines as he delivers punchlines. His comedic comedy, which is mainly self-deprecating and ironic, is often delivered in a modulated falsetto. His hair, particularly his bob with straight-lined front fringe, has been a signature part of his appearance and performance for the bulk of his career.
Philips has released three comedy collections. In 1985, his album E=mo2, which was recorded live at Caroline's in Manhattan, New York City, received the 1985 New Music Award for best comedy album. On a single CD, it was later re-released as a part of his Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre collection. In 2001, he released Emo, his first album. In a 2005 online poll, a joke of his was selected as the funniest religious joke ever. He appeared at the Newbury Comedy Festival in 2006. He was named in the top 50 of E4's Top Comedians and appeared on Channel 4's top 100 best standups, and also ranked 54.
Aside from Philips' long career as a stand-up comedian, he has appeared on television shows such as Miami Vice and The Weird Al Show. He appeared on British television in 2006 as a guest on the panel game 8 Out of ten Cats. Philips has several voiceover credits, including work on the animated series Dr. Katz, Home Movies; Space Ghost Coast to Coast; and Adventure Time as Cuber the nigma; and Dooper in the animated series Slacker Cats' voice. In February 2015, April 8, 2016, a 1990s themed episode, and the final episode on August 4, 2017, Philips appeared on four episodes of @midnight, a 1990s themed episode.
He has appeared in films including 1989's UHF (as Joe Earley, a somewhat clumsy school shop instructor who mistakenly saws his thumb off) and Desperation Boulevard in 1998. In addition, he appeared in the original 1992 version of Meet the Parents (also executive producer) and was an associate producer on the 2000 remake.
After a halt in the 1990s, Philips began to appear more often in 2001. His appearance was drastically changed, with him more "new millennium" than his signature bob and a 1970s casual disco look. Philips brought the same comedy routine to life, but with a much more subdued persona. Now sporting salt & pepper and dressed in black active sportswear. Philips no longer carried random props or undressed himself as he used to, although he was still fidacious. Philips, as with most of the Reagan Era comedians, felt the need to adapt to the evolving times and styles of the new digital age in an attempt to remain relevant to younger audiences, particularly late-generation Generation X and Millennials who made up the majority of college populations in the early 2000s.
Philips appeared on the comedy circuit for a few years, retiring it in 2005 and resurrecting it on the comedy circuit in 2010 with his classic appearance and persona. Since being a featured performer on several national comedy tours in Austin, Texas, and appearing on 24/7 Comedy, he has seen a significant surge in fame since then.
In Yankovic's Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, "Weird Al" Yankovic and Philips toured together in the United States in 2018. In the 2022 model, and again in the 2022 iteration.
