Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor (born 26 February 1984) is a Togolese professional footballer who last played as a striker for Turkish club Kayserispor.
He previously played for English clubs Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, as well as French side Metz, Monégasque team Monaco, Spanish team Real Madrid, and Turkish club Istanbul Basaksehir.
He was voted African Footballer of the Year for 2008 while playing at Arsenal.Adebayor represented the Togo national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, the country's debut, and to date only, appearance at the World Cup.

In his childhood, Adebayor and his family lived in an apartment without electricity or bathrooms, and to shower themselves, they would go to the beach.
Adebayor has spoken about his faith, saying, "Everything I do in life I put in the hands of God, my creator. He gave me the chance to be where I am today and He's the one that can take it all away from me. There is nothing more important for me than God." Adebayor could not walk for the first four years of his life. His mother took young Adebayor around Africa looking for a cure. Adebayor then spoke about his "miracle" saying, "I was in the church laying down and, around nine or ten o'clock on the Sunday morning, I could hear children playing outside. Suddenly somebody kicked a ball into the church. And the first person to stand up and run was me, because I wanted to get that ball."
On 5 May 2015, Adebayor made a lengthy post on his public Facebook page describing his family troubles. These troubles included several relatives asking for large amounts of money, his sister renting out a house he had bought for her without him knowing, and complications surrounding the death of his brother Peter. In July 2017, Adebayor stated in an interview regarding his family issues that his late brother had sent an official letter to Real Madrid asking them to not keep Adebayor on after his loan spell.
Club career
Adebayor spent the majority of his childhood in Togo, where he attended the Centre de Développement Sportif de Lomé, also known as Sporting Club de Lomé. Adebayor was discovered playing for Sporting Club de Lomé by scouts from Metz, who took him to France in 1999. On November 17, 2001, he made his Ligue 1 debut against Sochaux. After Metz's relegation, he spent a season in Ligue 2, where 13 goals in 34 league games prompted a transfer to Monaco in June 2003. In the 2004 UEFA Champions League final against Porto in Gelsenkirchen, he appeared nine times in Europe, for which he was an unfit substitute in his team's 3–0 loss.
Arsenal reported Adebayor for £3 million on January 13, 2006. Due to his resemblance to former Arsenal player Nwankwo Kanu, whom Adebayor had adored as a child, he was given the nickname "Baby Kanu." Adebayor made his Arsenal debut in a Premier League match at Birmingham City on February 4th, scoring after 21 minutes, with Arsenal winning 2–0. Adebayor finished fourth in Arsenal's 2006 UEFA Champions League Final appearance.
Arsenal defeated Manchester United 1-0 on Saturday, giving the Arsenal a 1–0 win and their first league victory of the 2006–07 season. Adebayor scored Arsenal's winning goal against Manchester United to give Arsenal a 1–0 win at Old Trafford. Adebayor was brought down in the six-yard box to earn Arsenal a penalty, which was taken by Gilberto Silva and saved.
In the 2007 League Cup final, Adebayor was sent home by Arsenal, who lost 2–1 to Chelsea. After a fracas in the match involving both Chelsea and Arsenal players, he was shown a red card. Adebayor equalized a goal for Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals against Villarreal on April 7, 2009, where he chested the ball into his possession and then executed a bicycle kick. In a 3–0 victory over Arsenal a week later, he scored in a 3–0 victory, setting up a semi-final showdown with Manchester United. Adebayor, however, was sidelined for the last two Premier League games and finished the season as Arsenal's second top goalcorer in all competitions, behind Robin van Persie's 20.
Adebayor signed a five-year deal with Manchester City for a transfer fee that was estimated to be in the region of £25 million. With a shot from 18 yards in the third minute, he scored a goal on his debut for City against Blackburn. As a result, he is one of only six players to play in the club's first four games. Adebayor's former teammate Robin van Persie accused him of intentionally punching him in the chest, and he was banned from playing three matches after being found guilty of violent conduct. Adebayor was also chastised for running almost the entire length of the pitch to Arsenal supporters and chanting his victory in front of them. He had been booked for this but later apologised. Mark Hughes, the City manager, suggested Adebayor do it because he wanted to be loved by City supporters. Adebayor's number 9 shirt was used instead of his favoured number 25, which he wore at Arsenal and City, for the 2010-11 season. In the 5–0 victory over Newcastle United on Tuesday, Adebayor scored on a volley and four assists. Adebayor converted a penalty against Arsenal on February 26 to lift Spurs 2–0 up at the Emirates on a 5–2 loss to Tottenham Hotspur. Adebayor's 28th birthday, Adebayor, converted a penalty against Arsenal on February 26 to knock Spurs 2–0 up at the Emirates. Adebayor scored two goals in a 3–1 victory over Swansea City on April 1st. Adebayor scored Gareth Bale's only goal in Tottenham's 5–1 loss to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals on April 15, 2012. Adebayor returned to the Tottenham team under Tim Sherwood's leadership after Spurs manager André Villas-Boas' dismissal, who had advised him to train with the youth squad at the start of the 2013–14 season, defeating West Ham United 2–1 League quarter-finals at home. With goals against Southampton, Manchester United, and Swansea City, Everton, and Newcastle United, he went on to score eight goals in his next ten Premier League matches.

Adebayor joined Crystal Palace in Premier League on a six-month contract until the end of the season on January 26, 2016. Adebayor joined Turkish Süper Lig side Kayserispor on a one-year deal on August 26, 2019. In December 2019, he left the club for the fourth time.
Adebayor joined Paragua División Club Olimpia Asunción on a free transfer from Kayserispor on February 11, 2020. On his arrival in Paraguay on February 14th, Adebayor was welcomed by a large crowd at Silvio Pettirossi International Airport. Following a positive medical exam, he agreed to a deal and was officially unveiled at the Estadio Manuel Ferreira. He was given the number 25 jersey. Adebayor was reunited with Roque Santa Cruz, his former Manchester City teammate who had returned to the club in 2016, who had returned to the club in 2016. Adebayor said it was Santa Cruz's influence that prompted him to enroll in Olimpia.
Adebayor made his debut in Olimpia against Cerro Porte in a 1–1 home draw on February 23, arriving in town after halftime in place of Santa Cruz. Adebayor made his first appearance in the 2020 Copa Libertadores in a 1-1 draw against Ecuadorian club Delfin on March 5th, beating Santa Cruz in the 80th minute.
He made his second and last league appearance against River Plate Asunción in a 1–1 home draw on March 9, 2020, playing the full 90 minutes at Olimpia's Estadio Manuel Ferreira. Adebayor was playing in the Copa Libertadores against Argentine club Defensa y Justicia three days later. Adebayor was suspended for a flying kick on Enzo Coacci while fighting an aerial ball and kicking for the ball with his right foot forward, which affected the opponent's face. Adebayor's last game for the club was this season. Adebayor and his family were quarantined in Togo in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the same month. Adebayor said in a Facebook post in April that he would return to Paraguay in two weeks.
Adebayor, who had been contracted until December, would not return to the club by mutual consent due to the increased risk of the contagious virus during travel and the fact that flying and stop offs were delayed. Adebayor said in the same month that he wanted to return to Olimpia at some point. Adebayor appeared in four Olimpia games from February to March.
Adebayor signed for Togolese Championship National Club Semassi in July 2021, following his time at Olimpia.
International career
Adebayor was also eligible to play for Nigeria, but he chose Togo, the country of his birth. After scoring 11 goals in the qualifiers, Adebayor helped Togo qualify for the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, more than any other player in the African qualifiers. At an awards ceremony held in Lagos, Nigeria, Confederation of African Football (CAF) selected Adebayor as the African Footballer of the Year for 2008. In a vote that included the national team coaches of CAF's 54 members, Adebayor defeated finalists Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt and Ghana's Michael Essien. It was the first time a Togolese was honoured as Africa's top player.
Adebayor coached Togo to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and launched all three group matches against South Korea, Switzerland, and France, but they did not score any goals and Togo ended up in last place in their group. After the finals, Adebayor was named team captain.
Adebayor was called up to the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was a replacement for the country's first match after a spat with the coach. Adebayor first promised to leave the tournament and return home, but he later returned to training with the team. Since losing all three matches, Togo was disqualified. Following the spat over compensation payments, Togo dismissed him. Adebayor was recalled to the Togo team in September 2007, but he was recalled in September 2007. He scored four goals in Togo's 6–0 thrashes of Swaziland in the World Cup qualification rounds on October 11, 2008.
Adebayor played for Togo against Cameroon despite being hurt. Togo's win, he scored his only goal in the match.
Adebayor was one of the passengers injured when the Togo national team's bus came under fire in Angola on January 8, 2010. Togo pulled out of the tournament after the deadly assault, in which all the participants were safe but three others were killed. Adebayor later announced his retirement from international football on April 12th, 2010 in a tweet that read: "I have weighed up my emotions in the weeks and months after the assault, but the events that followed are still haunted by the events on the Togo team bus. We were just footballers trying to play a football match and represent our country, but people from the beginning threatened us all. It's a moment I'll never forget and one I'd never want to revisit again."
Following Togolese Football Federation's warnings of health, Adebayor returned to international service in November 2011, beating Guinea-Bissau 1–0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier.
He was recalled again in November 2018 after refusing to play earlier this year. In March 2019, he was selected for the crucial 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match against Benin.
