Eloise Greenfield (born May 17, 1929) is an American children's book and biography writer best known for her lyrical style and optimistic portrayal of the African-American experience. Greenfield began writing poetry and songs in the 1950s while working in a civil service position after college.
She has published more than 40 children's books since 1971, including picture books, novels, poetry, and biographies.
She has concentrated her attention on realistic but positive representations of African-American families, families, and friendships.
She has also worked to promote the writing and publishing of African-American literature, as well as teaching creative writing.
Personal life
Greenfield lived in Washington, D.C., from the beginning and throughout her adult life. Robert J. Greenfield, a long-time friend, married her in 1950. Steven (born 1951) and Monica (born 1981) were married in the household, as well as a daughter, Monica. They divorced later. Greenfield was a fan of music and played the piano.
Greenfield died of a stroke at the age of 92 on August 5, 2021.
