Ellen Raskin Life

Ellen Raskin (March 13, 1928 - August 8, 1984) was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 13, 1928.

She was a children's writer and illustrator in the United States.

She received the 1979 Newbery Medal for The Westing Game, a suspense book, as well as another children's mystery, Figgs & Phantoms. In a report published by School Library Journal in 2012, The Westing Game ranked number nine among all-time children's books, a monthly publication with a predominantly American audience.

Life

Raskin was born in Milwaukee and grew up during the Great Depression. She earned a major in fine art at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Raskin was a natural graphic designer. She spent 15 years as a commercial artist in New York City. Among other things, she produced more than 1000 dust jackets for books, including the first edition of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, the 1963 Newbery Medalist.

She married graphic designer Roy Kuhlman in 1957, but they soon broke down. Dennis Flanagan, editor of Scientific American, married her in 1960.

Raskin died in New York City, August 8, 1984, as a result of a connective-tissue disease epidemic.

Education

Raskin began studying telegraphy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison at the age of 18, with the intention of focusing on telegraphy. However, she was also plagued by severe bouts of depression, which made her family life difficult.
