Elisabeth Murdoch (born 22 August 1968) is an Australian-born American media executive based in the United Kingdom.
Murdoch is the second daughter of Australian-born media investor Rupert Murdoch.
She was a non-executive chairperson of Shine Group, the UK-based TV production firm she founded in 2001, before her father's 21st Century Fox merged its Shine division with ApolloGlobal Management's Endemol and Core Media production houses, specializing in reality TV.
Early life
Elisabeth Murdoch was born in Sydney on August 22nd. Rupert Murdoch's father and her mother Anna Murdoch Mann (born 1944) are together. She was named after her grandmother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. She completed her secondary education at the Brearley School in New York City and earned a bachelor's degree from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Personal life
Murdoch's first marriage was to Elkin Kwesi Pianim, an associate in the Rothschild investment bank's New York corporate finance group. He is the son of economist and financier Andrews Kwame Pianim (a native of Ghana) and Cornelia Pianim (a Dutch immigrant). The wedding took place on September 10, 1993 at St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Beverly Hills, near the bride's parents' house in Beverly Hills. Cornelia Pianim (born 1994 in New York) and Anna Pianim (born 1997 in London) are their two children. They were divorced in 1998.
Matthew Freud, the son of former MP Sir Clement Freud and Sigmund Freud's great-grandson, was part of Murdoch's second marriage. In a ceremony at Blenheim Palace on August 18, the couple married. The couple had two children. The family lived in Burford Priory, Oxfordshire, from 2008, where they were one of the Chipping Norton family's key players. They also owned a house in Notting Hill, London. In 2014, the couple divorced.
Keith Tyson, a British artist, was married in 2017 by Murdoch.
Murdoch is a dual national of the United States and the United Kingdom. She now lives in London's St John's Wood neighborhood.
Career
Murdoch began her career as a program manager at her father's FX Networks, a cable television company headquartered in Los Angeles. Murdoch and her then-husband, Elkin Kwesi Pianim, purchased two NBC-affiliate television stations, KSBW and KSBY in California on a US$35 million loan secured by her father on September 22, 1994.
Murdoch and Pianim migrated to the United Kingdom, where Rupert Murdoch was running BSkyB. A haemorrhage of cash from Murdoch's News Corporation accounts was evident in the early years of BSkyB. Sam Chisholm, a New Zealand television executive, was brought on board to help with day-to-day operations and expand the subscriber base, with Elisabeth Murdoch as his second-in-command and de facto apprentice. By the time Chisholm left the business, BSkyB was the most profitable company in the United Kingdom by that time. Elisabeth, the company's managing director, oversaw the BSkyB's £12 million support of the troubled Millennium Dome until it was replaced by its Cabinet chairman, Peter Mandelson. However, she has been chastised for brokering her father's poor £623.4 million bid for England's champion Manchester United team.
She set out on her own in London as a television and film director after quarrelling openly with Chisholm. She suggested that Sky develop a film and production unit similar to BBC Films and Film4 Productions. This unit did not function, however, due to a lack of success, and it was forced to shut down. She founded Shine Limited in March 2001, with 80% owned by herself, 15% by Lord Alli, and five percent by BSkyB. BSkyB has agreed to purchase an agreed amount of Shine programming for two years.
In 2011, News Corporation acquired Shine in a turbulent arrangement that raised concerns about nepotism.
Murdoch was rated as the fifth most influential woman in the United Kingdom by Woman's Hour on BBC Radio 4.
Phone Swap, Murdoch's first dating reality show, debuted on Snapchat in 2018.
Murdoch has served on several boards, including Afiniti. She is now Executive Chairman of Sister, a London-based international television and film production and development firm, which has offices in Los Angeles. In 2019, she formed her production firm Sister. Chris Goldberg and his Winterlight Pictures firm were a part of Her Sister Production Company, which had an agreement with her brother and his Winterlight Pictures company. She most recently worked with actor Jeremy Strong.
In the 2022 Birthday Honours for services to diversity in the arts and to charities, Murdoch was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
