Louise Ruth Wolpert was born in Königsberg, East Prussia (now Kaliningrad), and grew up in Berlin. Paul Wolpert, her father, was a Russian-speaking Latvian Jew and a wealthy textile merchant. An aunt gave her the name "Lisl," which she later adopted for herself.
