Elihu Thomson Life

Elihu Thomson (March 29, 1853 – March 13, 1937) was an English-born American engineer and entrepreneur who was instrumental in the establishment of major electrical companies in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

Early life

He was born in Manchester, England, on March 29, 1853, but his family immigrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1858. Thomson attended Central High School in Philadelphia and graduated in 1870. Thomson served as a tutor at Central University and was appointed Professor of Chemistry in 1876 at the age of twenty-three. In 1880, he left Central to pursue research in the emerging field of electrical engineering.

Later life

He served as both a founding member and second president of the International Electrotechnical Commission.

He served as acting president of MIT from 1920 to 193. Thomson, who expressed his distaste for leadership, accepted the position during a crucial time for the university, when it could not otherwise find a president.

Thomson, who died at the age of 79 on June 21, 1932, was interviewed on film discussing his life and times.

Thomson died at his home in Swampscott, Massachusetts. In 1976, the Elihu Thomson House in Swampscott was designated as a National Historic Landmark and serves as Swampscott's town hall.

Personal life

On May 1, 1884, he married Mary Louise Peck (born: June 1, 1856 in New Britain, Hartford County, Connecticut).

Children

Clarissa Hovey Thomson was his second wife.
