Eliel Saarinen Life

Gottlieb Eliel Saarinen (August 20, 1873 – July 1, 1950) was a Finnish-American architect who specialised in art nouveau buildings in the early years of the twentieth century.

He was the father of Eero Saarinen.

Life and work in Finland

Saarinen was educated at the Helsinki University of Technology in Helsinki. He worked as a partner with Herman Gesellius and Armas Lindgren at the Saarinen company from 1896 to 1905. The Finnish pavilion at the Paris 1900 World Fair was the firm's first major work: a fusion of stylistic influences: Finnish wooden architecture, the British Gothic Revival, and Jugendstil. Early Saarinen's demeanor christened the Finnish National Romanticism, culminating in the 1904 Central railway station (constructed 1910–14).

He worked on Munksnäs-Haga's vast city-planning initiative from 1910 to 1915, and later published a book on the subject. He began working as a city planning consultant for Tallinn, Governorate of Estonia, and was invited to Budapest to aid in urban planning. A Saarinen brochure on Budapest's planning difficulties was published in 1912. He came second place in an international competition for his plan of Reval in 1912, but the following year he was named first place in an international competition for his plan of Reval. Saarinen worked on the city-plan for greater Helsinki from 1917 to 1918. He also created a line of postage stamps issued in 1917 and the Finnish markka banknotes introduced in 1922.

Saarinen married Louise (Loja) Gesellius, a Helsinki-born sculptor, and Herman Gesellius' younger sister, Mathilde, following his divorce from his first wife, Mathilde (who later married Herman Gesellius) on March 6, 1904. Eva-Lisa (Pipsan) was born on March 31, 1905, and Eero was born on August 20, 1910.
