Elden Francis Curtiss Life

Elden Francis Curtiss (born June 16, 1932) is an American prelate to the Roman Catholic Church.

He served as Bishop of Helena from 1976 to 1993, as Archbishop of Omaha from 1993 to 2009.

Early life

Elden Curtiss was born in Baker City, Oregon, and he was the eldest of four brothers of Elden and Mary (née Neiger) Curtiss. He attended the St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore, Washington.

Bishop Francis P. Leipzig ordered Curtiss to the priesthood on May 24, 1958. He was sent to parishes in Lakeview, La Grande, and Jordan Valley, Oregon, and served as a hospital chaplain.

Curtiss continued his studies at Fordham University, University of Portland, and the University of Notre Dame, obtaining a Master of Divinity degree and a master of arts degree in education administration. In the Diocese of Baker, he served as both director of information and superintendent of schools. He joined Mount Angel Seminary's faculty in 1970; in 1972, he was named president-rector of the seminary.

Curtiss was ordained as the seventh bishop of the Diocese of Helena by Pope Paul VI on March 4, 1976. Archbishop Cornelius Power consecrated him on April 28, 1976. "That We May All Be One" was Curtiss' episcopal motto (John 17:21).

By Pope John Paul II on May 4, 1993, Curtiss was named the fourth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Omaha. Curtiss was installed on June 25, 1993, succeeding the late Archbishop Daniel Sheehan.

Curtiss resigned on his 75th birthday in 2007 as required by church rule. Pope Benedict XVI resigned in 2009 and named Bishop George J. Lucas as his successor.
