This essay is about Édouard Michelin, who was born in 1859. * Édouard Michelin, born 1963, was a French industrialist who worked in France. He was born in Clermont-Ferrand, France. * Édouard and his elder brother André were co-directors of the Michelin company. Edouard seemed to be on a path to become a painter, but around 1888, he and his brother Andre returned to Clermont-Ferrand to try to save the failing family company, which was followed by a manufacturer of agricultural tools, drive belts, and hoses. * In 1889, he improved the look of the pneumatic tyre for bicycles, making tyres easier to change and repair. The invention proved its worth in the Paris–Brest cycle festival launched by Le Petit Journal in September 1891, and Michelin quickly modified his inflatable tyres for use on motorcycles, of which France was Europe's top producer. * Progress was swift, and approximately 300 taxis in 1896 were running on Michelin pneumatic tyres. * Around the turn of the century and beyond, his company saw record-breaking growth in the fledgling industry. World events overshadowed Michelin's death in the weeks that followed the German invasion of May/June 1940. However, by the time he died, Michelin had developed Michelin into a major industrial force, with numerous "firsts" in wheel and tyre engineering to its credit. * He supervised the acquisition of the (then bankrupt) Citron business in 1934, earning the company's reputation as one of Europe's most innovative auto-makers in the 1940s and 1950s, including Citron Traction, the new Citron TUC/TUC light van, and the 2CV, which was postponed at short notice). Édouard Michelin lived a long life and suffered with the personal traumas of his sons' death in 1932 and Pierre Michelin's death in a road crash near Montargis in 1937. * Michelin, like many industrialists, was a member of the anti-Semitic anti-Dreyfusard camp during the political turmoil surrounding the Dreyfus affair in turn of the century France. Édouard, his great-grandson, a former CEO and managing partner of the Michelin Group who died in a boating crash on May 26, 2006, was also named Édouard. In 2002, Édouard and his brother André were inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan.
