Edna Lillian Doré (née Gorring, 1921–2014) was a British actress born in London.

Doré was known for her bit-part appearances in situation comedies and for portraying Mo Butcher in EastEnders from 1988 to 1990.

Personal life

Doré lived in Barnes. She married actor, stage director, and writer Alexander Doré in 1946 in St Pancras, London, and was with him until his death in 2002. Michael Doré's son, Michael Doré, owns a pub in Hampshire. Doré studied with Anna Wing, who is best known for portraying Lou Beale in EastEnders. Doré died on April 11, 2014 at the age of 92, from emphysema.

Career

Doré began her career as a chorus girl in ENSA and then joined Phyllis Dixey as a dancer at the Whitehall Theatre. She spent 17 years in repertory theatre before joining the National Theatre for ten years, most famous for her appearances in Bill Bryden's productions, such as The Mysteries. She began to act on television in 1960 and appeared in many successful series, including Dixon of Dock Green, Doctor in the House, The Liver Birds, Terry and June, Tenko, Z-Cars, and Open All Hours.

She appeared in Mike Leigh's film High Hopes in 1988, for which she received the award for Best Supporting Player at the 1989 European Film Awards. Mrs. Bender, a child of Alzheimer's disease, was here. She appeared in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, where she played Mo Butcher, Mike Reid's battleaxe mother, Frank Butcher. During her time on the program, she gained acclaim for her portrayal of an elderly lady's fall into Alzheimer's disease. When Doré decided to leave the program in 1990, the drama, about the effect that Alzheimer's has on the sufferer's family, had to be postponed. At the end of 1992, the character was killed off. She appeared in Nil by Mouth in 1997. Tube Tales (1999), Weak at Denise (2001), and All or Nothing (2004) are among the film credits.

She appeared in Mike Leigh's film Another Year in the same year. In March 2011, she appeared in an episode of Midsomer Murders.

Doré was also a radio actor. She was featured in Bringing Eddie Home by John Peacock, based on a true tale of Eastend couple Edna and Jack Wallace's struggle to get their son's body home from Aden, as well as the subsequent fight for British servicepeople's rights. Doré appeared in the BBC Radio 4 series Paradise Lost in Cyberspace in February and March 1998. Alice in her last radio role appeared in A Telegram from the Queen, which was broadcast in 2011.
