Life and career

Rea left UCLA to attend business school before becoming an actress. In the 1940s, she began working as a production secretary at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She served as an assistant to writer-musician Kay Thompson until she was fired in April 1948 by Thompson. Rea's insistence on remaining at the Algonquin Hotel (rather than Essex House, where Thompson was staying), and even falling, on at least one occasion, on the eve of their New York opening to see Born Yesterday on Broadway, without telling Thompson. Despite Thompson's death, the younger woman retained contact with other Thompson's relatives, including Thompson's mother, brother, and younger sister, who loved cordial relations. Rea appeared in a supporting role in the National Road Company's production of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire (as Eunice Hubbell, 1948-1949), starring Anthony Quinn.

She appeared in I Love Lucy, The Wild West, Hazel, Bonanza, Have Your Gun Will Travel, Have Gun Will Travel, Semoke, Burke's Law, Marcus Welby, M.D., Matthew Welby, M.D., The Golden Girls, The Odd Couple, Widget, MacGyver, and The Golden Girls.

She appeared in feature films, including Norman Lear's Cold Turkey and In Country.

Rea is perhaps best known for her appearance in The Dukes of Hazzard (1979), as Lulu Coltrane Hogg. Rea appeared in 19 episodes as Hazzard County Commissioner Jefferson Davis Hogg (played by Sorrell Booke), aka Boss Hogg.

Rea permanently joined the cast in 1979 in the role of Rose Burton, a cousin of Olivia Walton, a surrogate parent figure who succeeded Ellen Corby (Grandma), Michael Learned (Olivia), and Ralph Waite (John) after portraying a landlady in a previous episode of The Waltons.

Rea remained with the show until 1981, when her beau Stanley Perkins (played by William Schallert) suggested Rose to her shortly before the show's cancellation. In 1993, Rea's Rose was featured in the Walton's Thanksgiving Reunion. Rea appeared on Step By Step from 1991 to 1992 and Grace Under Fire in the 1990s as a regular on the first season of Step By Step.
