Club career
Méndez began his career with Sociedad Deportivo Quito de Venezuela, his native Ecuadoria. He was reported to have attracted attention from English clubs, including Aston Villa and Everton, following his 2002 FIFA World Cup appearances, during which he scored the winning goal in Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Croatia.
He stayed with Club Irapuato de México for the second half of the 2004 season, winning 16 games and scoring 5 goals. Méndez went to Santos Laguna, where he failed to find a home in 14 games and scoring two goals after Irapuato's relegation the following year.
He returned to Ecuador and was a member of the LDU Quito team that won the Ecuadorian Apertura championship in 2005.
In 2006, just after the World Cup, there was rumors of a migration to Germany, more specifically Hannover. In August 2006, he put an end to all rumors by signing a one-season loan agreement with PSV Eindhoven, which was followed by a three-and-a-half year deal, limiting him to the Philips Stadion outfit until 2010. He made his Economy debut against Willem II and showed his passion for his new club by scoring two goals on a 3-1 win. He made his debut against Liverpool F.C. the following week, becoming the first Ecuadorian to play in the UEFA Champions League. In the game, he was named Man of the Match.
He became the first Ecuadorian to score in the UEFA Champions League in March 2007, scoring his first goal against Arsenal in the round of 16 matches. PSV's Mendez, along with fellow midfielder Timmy Simons and veteran Philip Cocu, helped the team reach the quarterfinals.
Mendez's fame was raised when he was selected for the Ballon d'Or-award for Europe's best players. Mendez reportedly wanted to return to Ecuador in Winter 2007.
Mendez returned to Ecuador for personal reasons in order to play for his old team LDU Quito on August 4, 2009. However, there is rumors that he may return to the club for the 2012 season.
Méndez, the Brazilian club Clube Atlético Mineiro's new player, was named in March. Since winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Ecuadorian midfielder began to defend his new team.

International career
In 1999, he attended the South American U-20 Championship in Paraguay and the Olympic qualifying tournament in Brazil in January 2000. In a 3-1 loss to Honduras in Quito two months later, he was called up to the full squad and made his debut in a 3-1 loss to Honduras.
He appeared in all three games of Ecuador's 2002 World Cup campaign, scoring in the 1-0 victory over Croatia in the country's first ever victory in a FIFA World Cup. Méndez's win over Croatia was a surprise, destroying them and securing Méndez's name as a celebrity. Many believed him to be the sign of Ecuadorian football, and many clubs were intrigued.
He scored five goals in the qualifying stage for the FIFA World Cup, including a spectacular double against Paraguay in 2005, which led Ecuador to a 5-2 win in Quito. He helped Ecuador qualify for the Germany 06 edition with his goals.
Méndez was back in his team's spectacular campaign in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which culminated in a 1-0 loss to England in the round of sixteen. Throughout the tournament, he was credited with two assists.
In the Copa América 2007, he appeared for Ecuador. He scored a consolation goal against Mexico in the tournament, defeating them 2-1. Mendez resigned from the national team on February 26, 2008, to the surprise of the majority Ecuadorians and the Latin American world. He has said that one of the reasons for his early departure was dissatisfaction with the newly appointed Ecuador coach, Sixto Vizuete. Méndez returned to the national team on May 12th, 2008, following a meeting with Vizuete and FEF president Luis Chiriboga in which they discussed any gaps and misunderstandings that might have led to his early retirement.
Méndez said on June 30, 2014, after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, that Méndez fought, "His cycle is over." Méndez, the Ecuador national team's retired from the team for a period of 14 years, finished with 111 Caps and 18 Goals for his country.
