Doug Marrone Career

Playing career

Marrone was born in the Bronx. He is of Italian origins. Marrone, a three-year letterman at Syracuse University, played from 1983 to 1985 on the offensive line; he returned to graduate from the university in 1991.

Marrone was drafted in the sixth round of the 1986 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Raiders, but the Los Angeles Steelers failed to make the 53-man roster. Marrone earned a spot on the Miami Dolphins' roster in 1987, playing in four games.

Marrone spent time in camp with the New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, and Minnesota Vikings, despite only playing in one more NFL game since 1989, when playing for the Saints. Overall, Marrone would be cut six times by NFL teams.

Marrone retired from playing in 1991 and 1992 with the London Monarchs of American Football, helping the Monarchs win the World Bowl for the Monarchs in 1991.

Coaching career

Marrone was appointed as Syracuse University's head football coach by athletic director Daryl Gross on December 11, 2008. He was the first Syracuse alumnus to serve as head football coach since Reaves H. Baysinger's 1948 debut as the first Syracuse slumnus to serve as head football coach. Marrone played as an assistant coach for a number of colleges and NFL franchises, beginning in 1992, with a stint with the New Orleans Saints as an offensive coordinator from 2006 to 2008.

According to reports, Marrone was wished for by alumni like Tim Green and Floyd Little until the former coach, Greg Robinson, was fired. Marrone was questioned by Green about Marrone's fact that the Syracuse area had a folder of current high school players to get a jump on recruiting.

The Syracuse Orange also won four times in Marrone's first season, one more than the previous year. The Orange doubled that output came in the following season. The eight victories in 2010 were the most since 2001 for the Orange. A win over Kansas State and a victory in the first-ever Pinstripe Bowl in New York City highlighted the 2010 season. This was Orange's first bowl win since 2001. The team started 5–2, with a victory over then No. 2 in 2011. The 11 West Virginia Mountaineers are the highest in the state. The Oranges struggled to win another game this season, finishing with a 5–7 record after the 5–2 start. Marrone guided the Orange Orange to an 8-55 record and a piece of the Big East crown as a result of a four-way tie in 2012. The West Virginia Mountaineers won by 38–14 in the Pinstripe Bowl for the second time.

Marrone was selected to replace Chan Gailey as the Buffalo Bills' head coach on January 6, 2013. During his two seasons as Bills head coach, he was 15–17. During his Bills tenure, Marrone referred to the fact that canonized as a saint takes two miracles (he believed winning at Syracuse was one miracle and winning at Buffalo would qualify as the other).

The Bills won their second place in the AFC East in 2014, defeating two other franchises from qualifying for the playoffs. This was the Bills' first winning season in ten years (when the Bills finished 9-7 under Mike Mularkey in 2004). After the death of Bills' founder and long-time owner Ralph Wilson, it was revealed that Marrone had a three-day "out" clause in his deal at the end of the 2014 season. Marrone started exercising the out clause and resigned on December 31, 2014, but his 2015 salary was still in full. Multiple players expressed their displeasure and disgust with both the decision and how he informed the team following Marrone's resignation. Running back Fred Jackson, one of the team's captains and the longest-served player, said it was "much like getting punched in the stomach." Marrone was interviewed by the New York Jets for their head coaching position; his interview, it is said, was not fruitful.

Following Marrone's two-year tenure as the Buffalo Bills' head coach, the Jacksonville Jaguars hired Marrone as assistant head coach and offensive line coach on January 20, 2015.

Following the dismissal of former head coach Gus Bradley, Marrone was named interim head coach of the Jaguars on December 19, 2016. He coached the final two games of the 2016 season. The Jaguars officially discarded the interim tag on January 9, 2017, making Marrone the fourth head coach in the team's history. Former head coach Tom Coughlin, the franchise's first head coach from 1995 to 2002, was hired as the Executive Vice President of Football Operations on the same day, a position he held until the 2019 season.

For the first time since the 2007 season, the Jaguars won the AFC South division championship in 2017. The Jaguars won their first playoff game under Marrone, defeating the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card Round, 10–3. They upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Divisional Round, advancing to the AFC Championship Game, where they were defeated by the New England Patriots by a score of 24-20.

The Jaguars renewed his deal until 2021 on February 23, 2018.

Despite back-to-back losing seasons since being called to the AFC Championship in 2017, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan announced on December 31, 2019 that Marrone will be retained for the 2020 season.

On January 4, 2021, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan announced that Marrone would not be retained for the 2021 season and was fired. Marrone finished his time in Jacksonville with a 23–43 (.368) record and a 2–1 (.667) playoff record, a career low of 25–44 (.362).

Marrone was named offensive line coach at the University of Alabama under head coach Nick Saban on January 19, 2021.

Eric Wolford, a football coach at Alabama, had accepted the position of Offensive Line Coach on February 1, 2022. Doug Marrone's employment has no information, or he was expected to resign from Alabama.

Marrone was hired as the offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints under new head coach Dennis Allen on February 9, 2022. This will be Marrone's first stint with the Saints in 14 years, as he previously served as their offensive coordinator under former head coach Sean Payton from 2006-2008.
