Douglas Eric Liman (born July 24, 1965) is an American film director and producer.

Early life and education

Liman was born in New York City, the son of Ellen (née Fogelson), a painter and writer, and Arthur L. Liman, a lawyer well-known for his public service, and he served as Chief counsel for the Senate Iran-Contra hearings. Emily R. Liman and Lewis J. Liman are his two siblings. Liman is Jewish and comes from a prominent New York family.

Liman began making short films while still in junior high school and at the International Center of Photography in New York City. He helped to co-found the student-run cable television station BTV and served as its first station manager while attending Brown University. In 1988, he co-founded the NACB, the first trade association geared to student-staffed radio and television stations.

Liman attended University of Southern California's graduate program, where he was selected to direct his first project, Getting In, in 1993.

Career

Swingers, Liman's first big success, was released in 1996. The film, directed by Jon Favreau and based on Favreau's life, is a comedy about struggling actors in Los Angeles' club culture. Liman raised the money and the film was shot on the cheap, starring Favreau and his allies (Vince Vaughn, Ron Livingston, and Patrick Van Horn). The film was a critical success, and it jump-started Liman and the supporting cast members' careers. Liman sold the film to Miramax for $5.5 million.

Liman's next film project, Go (1999), follows events of a drug deal gone wrong through three different points of view as plot lines shift and reconverge; Liman was also the film's cinematographer. The film was an indie hit and made a profit at the box office, grossing $28.4 million in relation to a $20 million budget.

Liman shot a commercial for Nike starring Tiger Woods in 1999.

Liman's next film was The Bourne Identity starring Matt Damon, an adaptation of the 1980 Robert Ludlum book. The film, which earned more than $200 million, opened a Bourne film franchise that has since included four new films. Liman produced three of the four sequels (2004's The Bourne Supremacy, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, and 2016's Jason Bourne).

Liman executive produced and directed the first two episodes ("Premiere" and "The Model Home") of the famed Fox prime time drama "The O.C.'s soaring Fox prime time drama "The Model Home"). (2003–2007). Indie Is Great, Liman produced and directed a sequence of comedies for the Chrysler Film Project and Cannes Film Festival.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a comedic thriller about an increasingly distant married couple who are hired to murder each other, was also directed by Liman. Liman's most commercially profitable to date, and the film's off-screen romance, which arose between stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie after making the film, is well known.

Liman joined NBC's television series Heist's pilot episode in 2005, which is about a season-long effort to rob three jewelry stores on Beverly Hills' posh Rodeo Drive. Hypnotic, the production company, has signed an agreement with NBC Universal Television Studio the same year. He changed the production firm from Hypnotic to Dutch Oven shortly after.

In 2008, Steven Gould's science fiction book Jumper was released in film.

In 2009, he co-founded 30ninjas.com, which is geared toward action movie and television enthusiasts, avid gamers, extreme sports, and viral videos. On the site, he also runs a blog.

Fair Game, a 2010 Cannes Film Festival entry, was directed by Liman. The Plame affair was an American film festival that screened for the Palme d'Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival.

Liman created and produced I Just Want My Pants Back, a television series that aired on MTV in 2011. On the USA Network, he created Covert Affairs and Suits, two original series. All You Need is Kill, a Hiroshi Sakurazaka book, was released as Edge of Tomorrow (2014), starring Tom Cruise. In the crime-action film American Made, a biopic of pilot Barry Seals, he directed Aaron Taylor-Johnson and John Cena in the military thriller The Wall and John Cena in 2017.

After leaving Gambit's adaptation, Liman signed on to direct Dark Universe, a film set within the DC Extended Universe and based on superhero team Justice League Dark. However, Liman has dropped out due to scheduling conflicts with the film Chaos Walking (2021), which Liman was filming at the time.

Live Die Repeat and Repeat, Liman's flagship project, was also in its early planning stages in January 2020.

Liman will be producing a fictional film shot in outer space in May 2020, according to the press. Tom Cruise is expected to appear and produce. As part of the SpaceX Axiom Space-2 mission, both will fly to space and to the International Space Station.

Liman was in talks to order a rewrite of Road House in November 2021.

Hargobind Tahilramani, 43, is charged with extradition to the United States for being the mastermind of a 1.0 million US dollar (£800,000) fraud affecting more than 300 victims between 2013 and 2020. He is said to have used fake accents and altered his voice to resemble female film executives in order to deceive industry professionals, including actors, screenwriters, and photographers.
