High school career

Finney-Smith attended I. C. Norcom High School in Portsmouth, Virginia. He averaged 19.7 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks per game as a junior on the school's basketball team in 2009.

Finney-Smith pledged to Virginia Tech in September 2010 and then signed a National Letter of Intent with the Hokies in December.

Finney-Smith averaged 18 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game as a senior at Norcom in 2010-2011. He led the team to the back-to-back Group AAA championships, as well as the Eastern Region and District championships. In the state championship game as a senior, he scored 19 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks. He completed his high school years as a two-time VHSL Class AAA Player of the Year as well as a first-team all-state, all-region, All-Tidewater, and all-district. As a senior, he was named All-Tidewater Player of the Year as a sophomore and co-player of the year.

College career

Finney-Smith played in all 33 games as a freshman at Virginia Tech in 2011, 2012–12, with 30 of them beginning. He had 6.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team. In a 66-65 victory over Boston College, he scored a season-high 17 points.

Finney-Smith moved to Florida in June 2012 and was forced to miss the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Finney-Smith, a sophomore in 2013-2014, was named SEC Sixth Man of the Year, becoming only the second Gator to win the award since Chris Richard in 2007. Both in total rebounds (247) and per-game average (6.7), he was Florida's top rebounder. In an overtime win over Arkansas, he scored his first 20/15 appearance as a Gator in a road game during Billy Donovan's tenure, totaling a personal record 22 points. In 37 games with two different starting positions, he averaged 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 25.8 minutes per game.

Finney-Smith was named second-team All-SEC by the coaches in 2014-15 and was Florida's top scorer (13.1), rebounder (6.2), and three-point shooter (.426). In Florida's win over Jacksonville, he scored a career-high 25 points, including a five-for--7 effort from three-point range.

Finney-Smith was named second-team All-SEC by the coaches and third-team All-SEC by the Associated Press as a senior in 2015-16. For the second straight season and top rebounder (8.3) for the third season in a row, he was Florida's top scorer (14.7) for the second straight season and top rebounder (8.3). After moving to the school mid-tenure, he became the first Florida player to join the 1,000-point club. His 1,220 career points at Florida ranked 36th in school history.

Professional career

Finney-Smith joined the Dallas Mavericks on July 8, making the team's debut in the 2016 NBA Summer League after being undrafted in the 2016 NBA draft. After impressing the Mavericks during training camp and preseason, Finney-Smith secured a spot on the open-night roster. Finney-Smith played 31 minutes against the Milwaukee Bucks on November 6, including the majority of the second half and overtime, after playing less than five minutes consistently over the first five games of the 2016–17 season. In an 86–75 victory, he earned five points, three rebounds, three steals, and one block. In a 109-97 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, he got off to a good start in his first career by scoring five points. In a 111-103 victory over the Indiana Pacers on December 9, he had a season-best game with career highs of 12 points and eight rebounds (equal game high). In a 112–92 victory over the Denver Nuggets, he had career highs in points and rebounds for his second straight home game, finishing with 13 points and nine boards.

Finney-Smith played in his first game since November 12, 2017, after missing 51 games and 57 overall with left knee quadriceps tendinitis. In the Mavericks' 114–80 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, he had seven points in 18 minutes in 18 minutes.

He re-signed with the Mavericks on a three-year, $12 million deal on July 11, 2019.

Finney-Smith led the San Antonio Spurs 117-110 to win by a record high 22 points on November 18, 2019. Finney-Smith scored a career-high 16 rebounds in a 114-110 win over the Sacramento Kings on August 4, 2020. In a 136-132 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on August 8, 2020, he had a career high 27 points and a career high 6 three pointers.

Finney-Smith signed a four-year, $52 million veteran contract extension with the Mavericks on February 12, 2022. In a 120–112 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 30, 2022, he scored a career high 28 points.
