Career
Dolce's boss, designer Giorgio Correggiari, met Stefano Gabbana in 1980. Gabbana and Dolce left Correggiari to work on their own in 1983; two years later, they founded Dolce & Gabbana S.p.A. (D&G).
The Dolce & Gabbana brand made its fashion debut at Milano Collezioni's Nuovi Talenti in October 1985 (New Talents). "Real Women" was released in March 1986 and held its first collection. In 1987, the first D&G store opened in Milan, Via Santa Cecilia. In 1988, D&G formed a partnership with Saverio, Dolce's father, who operated the manufacturing firm Dolce Saverio in Legnano near Milan.
D&G's fashion empire grew, staging its first fashion preview in Tokyo (April 1989) and New York (April 1990), and introducing new collection lines, including its first lingerie and beachwear collection in 1989, as well as its first menswear collection in January 1990. In November 1990, D&G opened its SoHo, Manhattan showroom on 532 Broadway. In October 1992, D&G introduced Dolce & Gabbana Parfum, the company's first fragrance.
When Madonna selected D&G to create the costumes for her Girlie Show World Tour in 1993, the Italian designers gained worldwide recognition. They have since begun to produce for Monica Bellucci, Kylie Minogue, Angelina Jolie, and Isabella Rossellini.
Later additions to the D&G line included ties, belts, handbags, sunglasses, and boots. The company sold more products in Italy by 2003 than Armani, Gucci, Prada, and Versace. The company had 113 stores and 21 factory outlets, a staff of 3,500 employees, and an annual turnover of more than €1 billion.
