Dmitry Orlov Career

Playing career

Orlov was ranked 29th amongst international skaters by International Scouting Services in 2009, and he was described as "a very hard-nosed player" who "everybody would love to have on his team." "A very savvy offensive-minded defenseman with excellent hand-eye coordination," the NHL's European Scout Service had him describe him as "an extremely skilled offensive-minded defenseman with excellent hand-eye coordination." The Washington Capitals later selected Orlov in the second round, 55th overall. Orlov returned to Russia after the draft, where he starred in a breakout campaign for Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the 2010–11 season. He accumulated 12 points over the season and was the top defenseman for Russia at the 2011 World Junior Championships.

Orlov made his North American professional debut with the Hershey Bears, the Capitals' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. Orlov tallied two goals and ten points while playing in the Bears' final 19 games of the regular season and six postseason games. In a 4–3 victory over the Albany Devils on February 26, he made his AHL debut on February 26, 2011, where he also registered an assist. The Capitals agreed Orlov to a three-year, entry-level deal after recording another assist in his second game with the Bears. In a 3–2 loss to the Worcester Sharks on March 9, Orlov scored his first North American professional goal.

Orlov was invited to participate in the Capitals Rookie Camp in September 2011 after the season was over. Orlov was praised for his "high-risk, high-reward style of play" while attending both the Capital Rookie and Development Camps. Despite this, he was later recalled to the AHL prior to the 2011-12 season. Orlov's career with the Bears was limited to four goals and nine points through 15 games before receiving his first NHL callup on November 20, 2011. He made his NHL debut against the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday, where he played 11 minutes and 56 minutes with three hits and one attempted shot on goal. Following his debut and scoring his first NHL goal against the Carolina Hurricanes, Orlov stayed with the Capitals on January 15, 2012. Through 60 games with the Capitals, he ended the season with three goals and 16 assists for 19 points.

Orlov was immediately recalled by the Hershey Bears for the 2012–13 season as a result of the 2012–13 NHL lockout. Orlov suffered with two injuries that kept him out of the lineup for a long time while with the Bears. His first injury occurred in November in November, but his second came in December and prevented him from attending the Capitals training camp in January. He started playing five games with the Capitals and only had one assist.

Orlov's 2013-14 season got off to a slow start. Orlov was obligated to be on the Capital's active NHL roster for a minimum of 30 days before being allowed to join the KHL due to a clause in his pact. He was regularly being recalled and returned to the AHL without participating in a game. He eventually earned a permanent spot in the line-up and played for the Capitals for 54 games. He was banned two games and forfeited $7,076.92 for boarding Brayden Schenn during a game during this period. Following the suspension, the Capitals announced Orlov's two-year contract extension worth $4 million on March 13. Orlov spent three goals and 11 points in 54 games with the Capitals before joining Team Russia at the 2014 IIHF World Championships. He suffered a broken wrist while playing at the tournament, causing him to miss the majority of the 2014–15 NHL season. Orlov was re-assigned to the Hershey Bears on a conditioning stint in March 2015 after missing 74 games.

Orlov, who had been sidelined for almost a year, joined the Capitals for their 2015–16 training camp and pre-season. While on their third line pairing with either Nate Schmidt or Taylor Chorney, he was with the Capitals through all 82 games. Following injury to Brooks Orpik and John Carlson, he increased his playing time, and he stepped up the defensive pairing after Orpik returned. He also earned only 26 penalty minutes and was the Capitals nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. Orlov helped the Capitals win the President's Trophy when they qualified for the 2016 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Orlov completed the 2016–17 season with career-bests in assists, points, and plus-minus in 82 games. On June 30, 2017, Orlov decided to extend his contract with the Capitals by six years, $30.6 million.

Orlov was suspended two games and forfeited $51,000.00 for kneeing Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers during a game on January 19, 2022.

PLAYOFF ROUNDUP: The Bruins beat the Panthers 4-2 in Florida, ending an emotional loss to them

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 22, 2023
Any concerns regarding the top-seeded Boston Bruins' readiness for the postseason were apparently answered in Sunrise, Florida, on Friday night. Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist, Linus Ullmark stopped 28 shots, and the Bruins defeated the Panthers 4-2 in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round series on Friday night, following their upset loss to the Panthers in Game 2 on Friday night. Charlie Coyle, David Pastrnak, and Nick Foligno all had aims for Boston, who regained home-ice advantage and took a 2-1 lead in the series. Dmitry Orlov had two long outlet passes that later became Bruins assistants. Alex Lyon shot out 23 of 26 shots for Florida, the Pastrnak goal with 11:28 people chasing him and Florida sending Sergei Bobrovsky. And that means the Panthers will have to make a big decision before Game 4 in Sunrise on Sunday afternoon.
