Dino Ciani Life

Dino Ciani (June 16, 1941 – March 28, 1974) was an Italian pianist. Ciani was born in Fiume (now Rijeka, Croatia), and she studied piano with Martha Del Vecchio in Genoa. * He obtained his degree at the Conservatory in Rome at the age of 14 and later, from 1958 to 1962, attending Alfred Cortot's advanced courses in Paris, Lausanne, and Siena. "miraculously gifted... one of the most rarest talents one could hope to find" Cortot described Ciani in the most vivacious terms: "miraculously gifted... one of the most rarest examples of the rarest talents one could hope to find" Ciani's career began in 1961 after winning second prize at the Liszt-Bartók Competition in Budapest. * He appeared in such venues as Salle Pleyel, Carnegie Hall, and the Chicago Philharmonic, Kennedy Center. * He appeared on his first appearance at Teatro alla Scala in 1968 under Claudio Abbado's baton, completing Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. * Abbado appeared at Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto in Rome in 1968 (then also at La Scala) and Mozart's D minor Concerto at the Salzburger Mozarteum, as well as Prokofiev's Fifth Piano Concerto. * Ciani performed with the young Riccardo Muti Beethoven's Choral Fantasy at La Scala and the Second Piano Concerto by Bartók at Milan RAI. For a pianist of his time, his repertoire was broad and varied. * It included Beethoven's complete sonatas, works by Weber (he was the first to record complete sonatas), Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, Debussy, and Bartók. * Schumann's Novelettes (1968) and Weber's second and third piano sonatas (1970) are among the pianistic heritage of the pianistic tradition. * With baritone Claudio Desderi's complete set of Chopin's Nocturnes and Schubert's Winterreise, one of his last concerts. * Beethoven's Third Concerto with Giulini in Chicago was his last live appearance. Ciani was killed in a road collision in Rome at the age of 32. In his memory, the Dino Ciani Piano Competition was established. It was established in 1975 and it is held at Teatro alla Scala. * Distinguished members of the jury include Nikita Magaloff, Martha Argerich, Maurizio Pollini, Lazar Berman, Rudolf Firkusny, and Aldo Ciccolini. At Cortina d'Ampezzo, there has been a Dino Ciani Festival and Academy dating back to 2007.
