Vitale reported that he was cancer-free in December after missing the entire 2023-24 season and several games from 2021-2022. He now describes his overall well being as 'fantastic.' Earl Cureton, a former Detroit Pistons star who appeared on the high school, college, and professional level, died on Sunday at the age 66 at his home in Michigan. Cureton was also a Detroit Mercy college student. Despite the fact that he never had the opportunity to play for Dick Vitale, a Detroit Mercy coach before being fired by the Pistons, Vitale helped Cureton transfer to Detroit Mercy. Cureton spent three seasons (1983-1986) with the Pistons, as well as ten years as a community ambassador for the organization.
