Dick Twardzik Life

Richard Henryk Twardzik (born 1931 in Danvers, Massachusetts, United States) was an American jazz pianist who performed in Boston for the majority of his career, but not for bebop. He studied classical piano as a child and made his professional debut at 14.

In comparison to Charlie Mariano's led him, he was taught by renowned Boston piano teacher Margaret Chaloff, mother of baritone saxophone player Serge Chaloff, whose group Twardzik wrote.

Twardzik has worked with Charlie Parker on several occasions, especially toward the end of Parker's life when he was on stage in a local context.

Twardzik has worked with Lionel Hampton, Chet Baker, and Serge Chaloff.

In 1954 and 1955, Twardzik met Baker and Chaloff, who became addicted to heroin as a youth.

While on a European tour with Chet Baker, he died of a heroin overdose.

Career

Twardzik began training classical piano as an infant and made his professional debut at the age of fourteen. Margaret Chaloff, the mother of baritone saxophone player Serge Chaloff, taught him. Twardzik appeared with Serge Chaloff and Charlie Mariano. He collaborated with Charlie Parker on several occasions during his lifetime, well into the end of Parker's life. Twardzik has worked with Chet Baker and Lionel Hampton as a professional. In 1954 and 1955, he appeared with Baker and Chaloff.

Twardzik became addicted to heroin in his adolescence. He died of a heroin overdose while on tour with Chet Baker in Europe.
