Horace Parlan Life

Horace Parlan (January 19, 1931 – February 23, 2017) was an American hard bop and post-bop pianist and composer.

He was known for his contributions to Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um and Blues & Roots.

Early life

He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Parlan's right hand was crippled by polio in his birth year. The handicap aided in the creation of a particularly "pungent" left-hand chord voicing style, as well as competing with high rhythmic terms with the right.
