Devan Dubnyk Career

Playing career

Dubnyk spent his junior career with the Western Hockey League's Kamloops Blazers. (WHL). He appeared in 192 games for the Blazers between 2001 and 2006, amassing an 83–87-14 record, 2.70 goals against average (GAA), 15 shutouts, and 15 shutouts. The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) named Dubnyk as the CHL's Most Valuable Player of the Year at the end of the 2004–04 season as the CHL's "most able to strike both on the ice and in school" during the season.

Dubnyk was first drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, 14th overall, at the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Dubnyk began his career in 2006 with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL, where he established a solid 24–11–7 record. His 24 victories, 2.56 GAA, and.921 save percentage set club records, and he was chosen to be an ECHL All-Star for the 2006–07 season. He began playing full-time for the Springfield Falcons, Edmonton's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. Dubnyk played 128 games with the Falcons in three seasons, totaling a 40–75–4 record. Dubnyk made his club record for most appearances by a goaltender in 2008–2009, with 62 points.

After Edmonton's starting goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin underwent season-ending back surgery, Dubnyk was called up by Edmonton early in the 2009-10 season. He served as the team's back-up to Jeff Deslauriers for the remainder of the season. Dubnyk made his NHL debut on November 28, 2009, against Deslauriers in a 7-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, allowing three goals on 24 shots. Dubnyk made 31 saves in his victory on March 19, 2010, his first appearance in the NHL since being shot out by the Detroit Red Wings; he won on March 19, 2010. In a 5–1 win over the San Jose Sharks on March 21, Dubnyk won his first regulation victory of his career, making 27 saves. Edmonton re-signed Dubnyk to a two-year deal on July 13, 2010.

Dubnyk's first full season in the NHL was the 2010-11 season, starting as Nikolai Khabibulin's backup. Khabibulin sustained injuries, but the Oilers' strong play culminated in the latter giving the latter over 30 starts. Dubnyk's season ended with a 12-13-8) record for a last-place Oilers squad, as well as impressing the Oilers coaching staff. "We had an idea of how much we wanted to play him, we've played him more, and he's made the best of it," Then-Edmonton Head Coach Tom Renney said of Dubnyk's season. In a 4–0 victory over the Nashville Predators on February 7, 2011, Dubnyk earned his first career shutout after stopping 37 shots. He closed out his season by winning back-to-back games against the President's Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks, stopping 46 of 47 shots against in the process.

Dubnyk fired the Pittsburgh Penguins 2–1 in the shootout on October 9, 2011, opening his first season opener. Dubnyk, on the other hand, struggled in his first 13 games as a result of a 3.03 GAA and a 0.902 save percentage, allowing Nikolai Khabibulin to briefly regained the starter's role. Khabibulin began to fail, but Dubnyk regained a significant portion of Edmonton's starting opportunities, finishing with a solid second half to the season. Dubnyk earned his chance to be the starting goaltender in March 2012 by posting a 6–2–1 record with a 1.95 GAA and a.934 save percentage, and starting 12 of the Oilers' final 13 games. He had not lost more than three goals in 20-straight games, and he had also won 16 of the Oilers' final 17 games. Dubnyk agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract extension with Edmonton during the upcoming offseason.

Dubnyk started the year as the Oilers' starting goaltender in the 48-game 2012–13 season for the first time in his career. For the seventh year in a row, the Oilers placed 12th in the Western Conference, losing out on the Stanley Cup playoffs for the seventh year in a row. Dubnyk, on the other hand, had a decent showing and a.920 save percentage in 14 victories and 22 losses, his then-best career NHL results, indicating that he will be a starter for a second year.

Despite the previous season's personal successes, Dubnyk struggled to start the 2013–14 season, and Ilya Bryzgalov, a newly signed veteran, put a strain on his starting job. Bryzgalov was hurt in just his third game for the Oilers, but Dubnyk was able to assist Dubnyk as Edmonton's starter.

Edmonton traded Dubnyk to the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Matt Hendricks on January 15, 2014. Dubnyk was sent by the Milwaukee Admirals on March 3 to accommodate goaltender Pekka Rinne's return from long-term injury reserve after only playing in two games as a Predator. Two days later, Dubnyk was traded again to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for future considerations from Nashville, this time to the Montreal Canadiens. He was then sent immediately to the Hamilton Bulldogs, Montreal's AHL affiliate, after failing to make a game for Montreal.

Dubnyk, an unrestricted free agent, signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Coyotes on July 1, 2014. With the Coyotes, he set a 9-5-2 record, thanking Arizona Goaltending Coach Sean Burke for helping him regained his focus and form in goal.

Dubnyk was traded from struggling Arizona to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for a third-round draft pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, during Mike Smith's return to form in the 2014–15 season as Mike Smith's backup. Dubnyk was drafted right away as Minnesota's starter. When Dubnyk made his Wild debut on his debut, a shutout victory over the Buffalo Sabres, Minnesota was eight points out of a 2015 playoff spot. Following his buyout, he'll get off to a 38-straight start, finishing 27-9–2 with a 1.78 percent save percentage, and five shutouts. He was also the winning goaltender in 11 of the Wild's 12 consecutive road victories from February 18 to April 9, tying the 2005-06 Detroit Red Wings for the longest such run in League history. The Wild eventually secured a playoff spot, and Dubnyk and the Wild defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-0 for their first playoff win in the Western Conference Quarterfinals on April 20, and Dubnyk revealed his first playoff shutout in his career. On April 24, Dubnyk was selected as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, as well as Carey Price of Montreal and Nashville's Pekka Rinne for goaltender of the year award honors.

Dubnyk received the Bill Masterton Trophy for his efforts to lead the Wild Wild to the playoffs while also resurrecting his career at the NHL Awards Show on June 24, 2015. In Hart Memorial Trophy voting, he came in third third and fourth, the latter as the League MVP. He was voted to the NHL second All-Star team when he was first announced.

Dubnyk, an unrestricted free agent, decided to remain with the Wild on July 4, 2015, completing a six-year, $26 million deal. The terms of the agreement were first discussed-upon on June 26, just before his free agent status was granted to him on July 1. Dubnyk's high level of play continued, and he was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game in January 2016.

Dubnyk was traded to the San Jose Sharks along with a 2022 seventh-round pick and 50% salary retention in exchange for a 2022 fifth-round pick. His debut came in the pandemic delayed 2020-2021 season, defeating the St. Louis Blues 5–4 in a 5–4 loss on January 18, 2021. In a 5–4 victory over the Blues on February 20, his first victory was over the Blues. Dubnyk won just three games in 17 appearances for the struggling Sharks, a 3.18 goals against average and a 898 save percentage.

Dubnyk was traded by the Sharks to bring depth to the struggling Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Greg Pateryn and a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

Dubnyk, the AHL's primary affiliate to the Florida Panthers, signed an unsigned free agent over the summer from Avalanche to the 2021-22 season. In his first appearance in the AHL since 2014, Dubnyk won by 4 starts before being banned from his tryout on January 19, 2022.
