Athletic career

Mitchell was born in Havelock, North Carolina. He received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, where he competed for the Florida Gators track and field team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition from 1986 to 1989. Mitchell was coached by Joe Walker at Florida. Mitchell placed third in the 100 meters relay at the 1988 Summer Olympics and skipped a potentially gold medal in the 4 x 100 meters relay event because the American team was disqualified in the early heats, leaving teammates Calvin Smith and Lee McNeill's race separated outside the exchange zone. Mitchell won the NCAA 200 meters run in 1989, and he was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 as a "Gator Great" in 2005.

Mitchell set his first world record in the 4 x 100 meters relay at Zürich in 1991, just a month before the World Championships. Mitchell was a member of the American 4 x 100 meters relay team, where he set a new world record of 37.50 in the final. Mitchell also took home a bronze medal in the individual 100 meters run, just 0.01 seconds shy of the world record.

Mitchell won his first United States National Championships title in the 100 meters in 1992 (he won this event in 1994 and 1996). Mitchell set a new world record in a 4 x 100 meters relay of 37.40 and took home a bronze medal in the 100 meters relay at the Barcelona Olympics.

Mitchell earned his third bronze medal in individual 100 meters and his third gold in a relay competition with a world record of 37.40, at the 1993 World Championships.

Mitchell won a gold medal at the 1994 Goodwill Games in 100 meters but he was injured in the heats of 100 meters at the 1995 World Championships. Mitchell placed fourth in 100 meters and received a silver medal as a member of the second-place U.S. 4x100 meters relay team at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
