Denise Robertson, a British writer and television broadcaster from 1932 to 2016 (British Broadcasting Corporation, Denise Robertson, 29 June 1932 – 31 March 2016, Denise Robertson (9 June 1932 – 31 March 2016) was a British writer and television broadcaster.
She made her television debut on the BBC's Breakfast Time programme in 1985, but she is perhaps best known as the resident agony aunt on the ITV show This Morning from its first broadcast on October 3, 1988 to her death.
She answered over 200,000 letters from viewers looking for help throughout her career.
She was appointed as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2006 for services to broadcasting.
Early life
Margaret Denise Broderick was born in Sunderland, County Durham, England, and she was the youngest of Herbert Stanley's two daughters (1889-1971) and Catherine Maud Broderick (1896-1970). Herbert owned a shipping company that failed before she was born. She attended Sunderland High School.
Personal life
Robertson was widowed twice; she married Alexander Inkster "Alex" Robertson (1919-1972) in 1960, and they had a son named Mark Alexander (born 1962). Alexander Robertson died of lung cancer in 1972. She married John "Jack" Tomlin (1921–1995) in 1973; he died of a stroke in 1995.
Bryan Thubron, she's childhood friend, was married in 1997. Robertson, a lifelong supporter of Sunderland A.F.C., was adamantly in his support for the cause. And had worked at the University of Sunderland, where he appeared as a guest speaker at graduation ceremonies. She lived in East Boldon, Sunderland.
Career
At Sunderland Royal Infirmary, she began working as a clerk. She then moved to the position of medical secretary and then became a counsellor. On Metro Radio in Newcastle, she won a BBC competition to write a play and became an agony aunt. In addition to This Morning, Robertson produced Dear Denise, a short television series produced in 2000. In 2002, she also appeared on Dave Gorman's Important Astrology Experiment as a love and marriage expert. She owned DearDenise.com, an advice website, and wrote a monthly column for Candis, a national newspaper. Robertson appeared on Channel 5's Bit on the Side on a Weekend.
