Although one guest artist did not turn up, Eln Ortz, a Puerto Rican producer, had invited him to appear on his TV show. Walter Mercado happened to be at the station and Ortiz ordered Mercado to make astrological predictions wearing colorful and extravagant robes. Mercado was first recognized as a regular on the program, making astrological predictions. He would often be seen in elaborately decorated costumes and capes.

In 1970, Mercado introduced a regular astrology service in El Show de las 12. He expanded his studies by undertaking formal research into astrology, tarot, and other occult fields. At WKAQ-TV, Channel 2/Telemundo, Mercado hosted a weekly astrology television show. After many years, when the network changed its programming, Mercado's show was moved to WRIK-TV (channel 7 in Ponce), where he had been hosting it for many years. Westinghouse was a reliable and long-time sponsor. His program appeared on numerous television networks in Latin America and the United States in the 1980s. Mercado stayed on television for two years before moving his show to WKBM-TV, Channel 11/Univision, later renamed WLII-TV/Univision). Mercado also wrote his newspaper, magazine, and web pages in addition to the TV programs. In the Miami Herald, he was syndicated writer. He has appeared on numerous radio shows as well.

Mr. Televisión was named by the Asociación de Cronistas del Espectáculo de Nueva York in 1986. (Association of Latin Entertainment Critics of New York) Mercado debuted Mr. Televisión. Bill Bakula, an entrepreneur, was in charge of him. He was invited to appear on Totally Scott-Lee's show in 2005 to give her a special reading. He appeared on Primer Impacto, which airs on the Univision network in the United States, from 1994 to 2009.

Mercado's other ventures in the mid-2010s included a dating website, a line of Zodiac-themed soaps and hygiene products, and a famous personal website and app offering daily horoscopes and more. In the first month, his eponymous website attracted over 1 million visitors. Mercado made limited public appearances during this time period as well.

Mercado settled a case against Bart Enterprises International in January 2012. He was attempting to discourage it from using his name and image in future business ventures. In 1995, Mercado inked a deal with the firm. In 2006, he severed his links with the company, resulting in litigation being filed by both sides against each other. Bart Enterprises can continue using Mercado's name and image in future industrial projects, according to Chief Judge Sandra Lynch of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. "I worked for many years, and gave some exemptions to people who were curious about human wickedness," the lawyer replied.
