DeMar Darnell DeRozan (born August 7, 1989) is an American professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs of the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the USC Trojans and was selected ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors in the 2009 NBA draft.

He is a four-time NBA All-Star and a two-time All-NBA Team member.

He spent nine seasons with the Raptors, including five playoff runs, before being traded to the Spurs in the summer of 2018.

DeRozan has played for the United States national team in the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Personal life

DeRozan is the son of Frank and Diane DeRozan. DeRozan's mother was diagnosed with lupus when he was a child. While with the Raptors, DeRozan helped raise awareness and educate Canadians on the disease in part by partnering with Lupus Canada.

DeRozan also suffers from depression, and is an advocate for others suffering with it. After DeRozan and fellow NBA player Kevin Love spoke publicly on mental health it prompted the NBA to add a new rule that requires a team to have at least one full time licensed mental health professional on their staff. The duo also appeared in a PSA video by the NBA that launched the new mental health professional program alongside a new website with various mental health resources.

DeRozan lost his father Frank DeRozan in February 2021 after battling health issues. He said he would regularly fly to Los Angeles from San Antonio or any city he was playing at to be by his side throughout his last moments.

High school career

DeRozan attended Compton High School and was voted one of the country's best college recruits from the 2008 class. He was ranked No. 1 in the world of No. 1 for 2009. He averaged 26.1 points and 8.4 rebounds as a freshman. He averaged 22.6 points and 8.4 rebounds in his sophomore year, while a junior he averaged 22.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 3.2 steals.

DeRozan, a senior who averaged 29.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, led Compton High School to a 26–6 record and second consecutive Moore League championship and the CIF Southern Section quarter-finals. He was named to the Orange County All-State team for his efforts. DeRozan was a member of McDonald's All-American Team in 2008 and also won the McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Competition in 2008. He was also permitted to compete in the 2008 Jordan Brand Classic at Madison Square Garden and the Nike Hoop Summit, where he scored a team-high 17 points. In his senior year, DeRozan's on the court earned him first-team Parade All-American awards and First Team Best in the West honors.

College career

DeRozan wrote a letter of intent to play basketball at USC in November 2007. Over Arizona State and North Carolina, he preferred USC over the University of Arizona and North Carolina.

DeRozan scored a team-high 21 points with seven rebounds in an exhibition game against Azusa Pacific, an 85–64 victory at the Galen Center in his first game for the Trojans. In his first regular season game in the win over UC Irvine, DeRozan had 14 points. In the Pac-10 Tournament semifinals, he scored 21 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, before leading his team to a 61-49 victory over Arizona State on 10-for-16 shooting to lead his team to a 61-49 victory. In addition to being named Pac-10 Tournament MVP, Jack's efforts in the tournament culminated in him winning First Team Pact All-Freshman awards. The Trojans qualified as a 10th seed in the 2009 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament, where they lost in the second round to Michigan State.

DeRozan appeared in all 35 games for the Trojans during his career, scoring in double figures 28 times and four double-doubles. He came in third on team in points (13.9 ppg), second in rebounds (5.7 apg), third in assists (1.5 apg), and second in field-goal percentage (.523, eighth best in conference) and third in field-goal percentage (5.7 ppg). DeRozan dominated the regular season by scoring 19.8 points in USC's five postseason games. His 485 points are third all-time, and his 201 rebounds are fourth all-time for a USC freshman.

Professional career

DeRozan revealed on April 8, 2009, that he would draft the 2009 NBA draft and forego his final three years of eligibility at USC. In the 2009 draft, he was ranked ninth overall by the Toronto Raptors on June 25, 2009. He said that part of the reason for his NBA departure after just one year in college was to help his mother, who suffers from lupus, to take care of her child.

DeRozan's rookie scale deal with the Raptors was signed on July 9, 2009. DeRozan lost in the final round to three-time champion Nate Robinson in the fourth round of the 2010 Sprite Slam Dunk Competition. The final percentage went from 51% to 49%. DeRozan was selected to compete in the 2011 Sprite Slam Dunk Competition as a replacement for injured guard Brandon Jennings. He came in third place in third place.

DeRozan scored a career-high 37 points against the Houston Rockets on December 31, 2010. He matched the Utah Jazz on November 12, 2012, and the Chicago Bulls on November 15, 2013 — a career high two times over the next three years—against the Utah Jazz and the Chicago Bulls.

DeRozan scored a career-high 40 points against the Dallas Mavericks on January 22, 2014, shooting 15-of-22 from the field. DeRozan was selected as a reserve guard for the Eastern Conference All-Star team on January 30, 2014, and he was the only one in the Eastern Conference All-Star Game. DeRozan scored 14 points on a 3-of-13 shooting in DeRozan's first playoff game against the Brooklyn Nets on April 19, 2014. In Game 2: DeRozan recovered from defeating in Game 2 and scored 30 points on 9-of-21 shootings. In defeat, he scored 30 points, 5 boards, and 5 assists on April 25, the first five years. DeRozan was the first Raptor to score 30 points in back-to-back playoffs games, and the first Raptor to score 30 points in multiple playoff games since Vince Carter. DeRozan had 11 rebounds and six steals, along with 15 points, in a 109-102 victory in the Raptors' season opener game of the 2014–15 season against the Atlanta Hawks. With a torn left adductor longus tendon, he was barred out permanently on November 29, 2014. He sustained the injury the night before being unable to return against the Dallas Mavericks at 8:23 p.m. on the third quarter. In a 100–84 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on January 14, 2015, he returned to action, scoring 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting in a 100–84 victory. In a 114-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on March 2, he scored a season-high 35 points. In a 99-96 victory over the Houston Rockets, DeRozan scored a career-high 42 points. Kyle Lowry (December 2014) and Chris Bosh (January 2007) were among the first players in team history to be named Player of the Month for April.

DeRozan scored a franchise-record 20 points in Game 3 of the Raptors' first-round playoff series with the Washington Wizards on April 24, beating Vince Carter's previous record of 19 points in a first quarter of a playoff game.

In a loss to the New York Knicks on November 10, 2015, DeRozan scored a then-high 29 points on a then-season-high 29 points. He became the first Raptor since Chris Bosh in 2009–10 to accomplish the feat in a straight game to start the season. DeRozan was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played December 7-13 for the first time in his seven-year career and became the seventh player in team history to be named Player of the Week on Sunday. With a 56–26 record, the Raptors became the second seed in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. The Raptors defeated the seventh-seeded Indiana Pacers in the first round of the playoffs, and DeRozan scored 34 points to help the Raptors win by a 3–2 series lead. DeRozan scored 30 points in Game 7 of the series to help the Raptors win a best-of-seven series for the first time in franchise history. The Raptors advanced to the second round of the Miami Heat after a 4–3 series over the Pacers. DeRozan scored 34 points in Game 5 of the Raptors' series with the Heat, helping the Raptors claim a 3–2 series lead with a 99–91 victory. DeRozan re-signed with the Raptors on July 14, 2016, a five-year, $139 million contract. DeRozan was a starter on the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, making him the fourth Raptors player to be named as a starter after Vince Carter, Chris Bosh, and Kyle Lowry. In a 92-89 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on April 27, 2017, DeRozan scored 32 points, helping the Raptors win their first-round playoff series in six games. In the second round, the Raptors lost in a clean sweep to the Cavaliers. DeRozan appeared in all ten playoff games, scoring 22.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. DeRozan scored 37 points in a 109-100 victory over the Utah Jazz on November 3, 2017, earning 17 points and his third straight four-point play in the third quarter. In a 115-109 victory over the Phoenix Suns on December 13, 2017, he tied his season high with 37 points. In a 114-109 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on December 21, 2017, he tied for his career high with 45 points. With six 3-pointers in nine attempts, he also set a new career high. DeRozan scored a franchise-record 52 points to help the Raptors beat the Milwaukee Bucks 131–127 in overtime, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks for their 12th straight home win. DeRozan was the first NBA player to earn 50+ points on New Years Day. He was also the third player in Raptors history to score 50 or more in a single game, the others being Vince Carter and Terrence Ross, who each had 51 points. DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a secured 2019 first round draft pick were traded to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green on July 18, 2018. DeRozan, a fan favorite in Toronto and had not been informed about the trade by Raptors president Masai Ujiri prior; however, DeRozan's large contract freed up significant salary cap space.

In a 109-95 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, he scored at least 25 points in seven of the team's first eight games on November 3. George Gervin, 1978-79, was the only other San Antonio player to do so. In a 131-118 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on December 2, he had a season-high 36 points. In a 127-120 victory over the Utah Jazz on January 29, 2020, DeRozan scored a season-high 38 points as a team's five assists. In a 119-109 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on March 10, he logged a season-high 12 assists, as well as 13 points. The Spurs were one of 22 teams invited to the NBA Bubble in March after the NBA season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. National team career

DeRozan was a member of the USA national team that lifted the gold medal in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He averaged 4.8 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game in nine games.
