Dayahang Rai (Nepali) is a Nepali actor, director, and playwright. Dayahang is known for his uniqueness in Nepali cinema. He is one of Nepal's most well-known and respected actors. He has appeared in over 40 films and is one of Nepal's top contemporary actors. Throughout his career, he has received various awards for his performances. Dayahang is a veteran dramatic actor who made the jump to Nepali cinemas.

Dayahang has risen to prominence thanks to the television series Yuva, Dalan, and the Hamro Team. He made his film debut with Anagarik (2006). Dasdhunga (2010) was quite profitable, but Loot (2012) was the turning point in his career, which was a major hit. Since then, he has appeared in many commercially successful films, including Chhadke (2013), Badhshala (2013), Jholey (2013), Kabaddi (2013), and its sequels. Kabaddi Kabaddi (2016), Brute vs. Tulke (2016), Woda Number 6 (2017), Kaanchi (2018) and Jatrai Jatra (2019). The film White Sun (2016), which he starred in, was the first Nepali film to be nominated for Academy Awards.

Early life

Dayahang Rai Rai was born in Khawa, Bhojpur district in Eastern Nepal, to Tilak Ram Rai and Chandra Devi Rai. He is the family's middle child. He has two younger sisters and an older brother. Dayahang Rai belongs to the Bantawa, Kirat Rai ethnicity of Nepal. Dayahang completed his lower secondary education from Pashupati Lower Secondary School in Khawa, Bhojpur District, and the Annapurna Secondary School, Dilpa, Bhojpur, in 1998. As a Geography Major, he completed his intermediate level studies at Bhojpur Multiple College. In 2001, he moved to Kathmandu and began as a Journalism Major at The Ratna Rajya Campus (now Manawiki Campus).

As a child, Dayahang's mother used to read fairy tales, which enthralled him greatly and ignited his imagination. He had an interest in acting from the start of his life. He was drawn to drama at school. Dayahang's heart was not into his studies, so he decided to follow his passion and pursue a career in theatre and theatre.

Acting career

Dayahang joined Actors' Studio (a platform for theater artists in Nepal) in 2007. He is now affiliated with Mandala Theatre, Nepal, which he co-founded.

Yuwa was Dayahang's first foray into film acting. Dalan, a series directed by Nabin Subba in 2003, was followed by Dalan. In 2009, Nepal Television premiered the series. In Anagarik (2006), Ram Babu Gurung's feature film that received two awards at the Nepal International Film Festival, he began his big screen career as the lead. Dayahang continued to celebrate by appearing in the romantic film Mero Euta Chha (2009) starring Sudarshan Thapa. Dayahang received a lot of flak over his role in the film Dasdhunga (2009). He received his first National Award for being the best supporting actor in Dasdhunga. He appeared in Acharya (2010), directed by Prashant Rasaily and Mero Love Story in 2010.

Dayahang appeared in the hit Nepali film Loot in 2012. In this film, Dayahang co-wrote the dialogues. Critics and audiences alike gave Gofle's character high marks. The film was a turning point in his career. He received the Popular Award for Loot. Dayahang gained more fame for his role in the film Highway (2012). Dayahang and other well-known Nepali cinema actors, including Saugat Malla and Arpan Thapa, were brought together in Chhadke, 2013. Badhshala (2013) was the first of Dayahang's films on Nepal's Maoist-led Civil War. Following protests from the Nepali army, the film was banned. Dayahang, a 2013 film in Karkash, played a drummer in a struggling music group. Dayahang had a minor role in the critically acclaimed film Saanghuro (2013), but it was a good one for sure. In the suspense thriller Loafer in 2013, Dayahang and Aryan Sigdel appeared. Mukhauta (2013), a critically acclaimed film starring Nepali actors like Dayahang, Rajesh Hamal, Saugat Malla, and Sunil Thapa.

Both Dayahang's two films Kabaddi (2013) and its sequel Kabaddi Kabaddi (2015) were huge hits in Nepal and abroad. He received his third National Award for best actor for Kabaddi. Dayahang joined Priyanka Karki in the commercially lucrative Jhole in 2014. In the best actor category, Dayahang received his second National Award for his film Sambodhan (2014). Dayahang's versatility as an actor against the backdrop of the Nepali Civil War was shown by the critically acclaimed Talakjung vs. Tulke (2014). Dayahang appeared in Fanko, a critically acclaimed film starring Saugat Malla, Priyanka Adhikari, and Keki Adhikari.

Dayahang appeared in the critically acclaimed White Sun (Seto Surya), based on the civil war in Nepal, which was Nepal's entry to the 2018 Oscar Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Dayahang appeared in the Ram Babu Gurung film Purano Dunga (2016), which was a huge commercial success. Loot 2 was the sequel to Loot 2, with Dayahang returning as the favorite Gofle. In Ghampani, Dayahang collaborated with Keki Adhikari, which became a commercial success and was widely praised. Dayahang was in the role of a police officer fighting a gang in Lappan Chhappan, an action thriller. Dayahang appeared in his fourth film about Nepal's civil war in Taandro, which was critically acclaimed.
