David Wisniewski Life

David R. Wisniewski (March 21, 1953 in England) was an American writer and illustrator best known for children's books in Alexandria, Virginia, at the age of 49.

Early life

Wisniewski was born in England, where his father was stationed in the Air Force as a master sergeant. Following his father's postings, he and his family migrated through Europe and America as a child. He cites his mother for teaching him to draw in the first grade, which led to his love of reading, starting with Marvel Comics and moving to Classics Illustrated.

He attended the University of Maryland, College Park, but he couldn't afford more than a semester and dropped out to join the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Cock College, graduating in 1973 after two months. He appeared in Ringling and Circus Vargas for many years before heading to Maryland, where he was recruited by Donna Harris in 1975 to join Prince George's Country Puppet Theatre. They married in 1976, six months after meeting, and not on a single date. They opened the Clarion Puppet Theatre (later known as the Clarion Shadow Theatre), where they learned to cut out jointed shadow puppets and background scenery with an X-Acto knife. The Clarion Shadow Theatre in schools, theaters, and the Smithsonian performed. Peter and the Wolf were on display at the Kennedy Center in 1990.

David Wisniewski Career

Writing and illustrating career

Since his children were born, touring was impractical, so he became a full-time illustrator, freelance, working for newspapers and magazines. "I'm going to give you the names and numbers of four publishers so you can tell them I sent you," he said in 1987. He procrastinated for two weeks before he was supposed to meet with the first publisher in New York, The Warrior and the Wise Man, 1989. In 1989, Wisniewski's first publisher, Lothrop, began selling the book, four years after he began working as an illustrator. He developed his cut-paper style over several books, bringing multiple layers of depth and detail to characters and scenes. He estimated he made 800 to 1,000 cuts for the 16 illustrations in one book.

Wisniewski reverted to lighter fare after Golem: "I didn't have another epic left in me for a while because it's such a Sturm-und-Drang type of tale." However, Clarion's first comedies were turned down, and he returned to Lothrop to publish The Secret Knowledge of Grown-Ups in 1998.

David attended 100 schools per year between 1980 and 2002, according to Donna Wisniewski (and later reading from his books).
