He joined Hull in January 2013 after a short loan spell.
He has been a full international for the Republic of Ireland since 2012.
Early life
Meyler was born in Cork, Ireland, to Stella Bowles (medical laboratory technician) and John Meyler (GAA dual player and manager).
Club career
In 2008, he progressed through Cork City's youth team before earning a professional one. He made three appearances for Cork, his first appearance in a cup match against Limerick on June 6, 2008.
Meyler joined Sunderland on July 25, 2008 for an undisclosed fee estimated to be around £250,000, up nearly 45% since his debuts and his first Republic of Ireland senior call-up. He was their third summer signing and followed former Cork City teammate Roy O'Donovan by heading to the Stadium of Light. However, Meyler made his first professional appearance for the club, against Blackburn Rovers on December 28, 2009. Meyler received a straight red card on his third appearance for Sunderland in Portsmouth on February 9, just minutes after he was introduced as a second-half replacement. On May 2, 2010, he sustained serious ligament damage against Manchester United, which was expected to keep him sidelined for up to 12 months. However, he recovered faster than expected, leading to his comeback for Sunderland's Reserves against Liverpool Reserves on November 2nd, 2010. Meyler would not be rushed back to first team action, according to boss Steve Bruce. Surprisingly, he returned to Fulham for 52 minutes in a 0–0 draw. Meyler pulled up suddenly and was stretchered off in Sunderland's away match at Aston Villa on January 5th. Meyler sustained cruciate ligament damage to the same knee as before in Bruce's game. Meyler had a knee scan and had to tear his medial ligaments, which was later revealed by Sunderland. Meyler was out for another ten weeks rather than six months, which was first feared. Meyler returned to the Sunderland bench after losing to Birmingham City on April 16, 2011.
Meyler returned to fitness by Sunderland in the 2011–12 season, playing in numerous reserve games before making a cameo replacement debut in the 2–2 draw with West Bromwich Albion on October 1, 2011. He also appeared as a late replacement against Aston Villa and Manchester United. Meyler's first appearance under Martin O'Neill came as a 63rd-minute substitute in the 4–1 victory over Wigan Athletic on January 3nd 2012. Meyler made his first appearance of the season on February 4th and was heavily involved in the controversies after Robert Huth received a straight red card for a challenge. Sunderland defeated 1–0, with Meyler's response: "I think Robert commits himself" pulls out, and I don't think he even sees Meyler, or whatever his name is," she says, and I'm really dissatisfied with the player's reaction... For me, Robert doesn't think he touches the lad, and the way he goes down and rolls around indicates that he did it for a reason, not to get him fired." Meyler did not start another game for the remainder of the season, but he did play a lot of times as a substitute.
Meyler was reunited with former boss Steve Bruce on Monday as he went out on loan to Hull City until January 2013. In the away match against Cardiff City on November 10, 2012, he made his debut from the bench as a second-half replacement for Jay Simpson. In the 1–2 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road on December 8, he scored his first goal for the club. He scored again in the upcoming game on December 15th, bringing a 2–0 win at home to Huddersfield Town. Meyler was officially hired by Hull on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee on January 8, 2013.
Meyler scored his first Premier League goal against Liverpool on December 1 in a 3–1 home victory. Meyler was complicit in a touchline scuffle with Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew, who denied him. Meyler's corner flag had mocked the event eight days after scoring in a 3–0 FA Cup quarter-final victory over former team Sunderland.
He scored Hull's fifth goal in their 5–3 FA Cup semi-final victory over Sheffield United on April 13, 2014 at Wembley Stadium. He was involved in the 2014 FA Cup Final against Arsenal on May 17th.
Meyler agreed to a two-year deal with Hull City on January 22nd.
Hull released him at the end of the 2017–18 season.
Reading revealed Meyler's signing on a two-year contract with the option of a third, with the deal set to conclude on June 30, 2018.
Meyler resigned from Reading on July 31, 2019 after his employment was terminated by mutual consent.
Meyler joined Coventry City on loan until the end of the 2018-19 season on January 31.
Meyler resigned from professional football on August 30, 2019.
International career
Meyler made his international debut in Cork against Germany in a 1–1 draw against Germany in February 2009. When his first knee injury struck the Republic of Ireland's senior squad, he had been forced to withdraw.
Meyler was called up to the Republic of Ireland's senior squad on September 1st. Following Ireland's disappointing Euro 2012 campaign, he was called up to the squad as a replacement for Darron Gibson, who took a break from international football. In a 4–1 victory over Oman at Craven Cottage on September 11, 2012, he made his senior international debut. He represented the national team at the 2016 Euro Championships in which they lost to France in round of 16.
