David Luiz Moreira Marinho (born 22 April 1987) is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Arsenal and the Brazil national team.

Primarily a centre back, he can also be deployed as a defensive midfielder.

He joined Chelsea in January 2011 after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2011–2012 season.

He won the UEFA Europa League the following season.

He moved to Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million, a world record for a defender, and he has participated in all four domestic tournaments during his two seasons in French football.

In August 2016, David Luiz made his full international debut for Brazil in 2010 and has since earned over 50 caps for his country.

Club career

David Luiz, born in Diadema, S. Paulo, was transferred to Ladislao and Regina Marinho by So Paulo and started playing as a defensive midfielder and nearly left the club after being dismissed by Sória, almost leaving the club due to his poor results in that position. However, he was soon promoted to central defender and adapted well.

David Luiz made his Vitória debut in 2006, winning by a 2–2 draw against Santa Cruz in the Copa do Brasil that year. The club eventually promoted to the second division after finishing in eighth place in eight of the club's last critical nine games, scoring his first league goal on September 3, 2006 against Clube Atlético do Porto in the worst situation of its history, in the third division.

David Luiz joined Portuguese club Benfica as a substitute for Tottenham Hotspur-bound Richa (on loan). In a UEFA Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, he made a tumultuous debut for the club, teaming compatriot Anderson in the center of defense, replacing the injured Luis's. Benfica lost the match 2–1 but advanced to the next round after winning 4–3 on aggregate.

David Luiz played his first league match for Benfica against Unio de Leiria on March 12, 2007. Following ten league appearances, he signed a five-year deal with the club at the end of the season.
