Club career

David Luiz, born in Diadema, S. Paulo, was transferred to Ladislao and Regina Marinho by So Paulo and started playing as a defensive midfielder and nearly left the club after being dismissed by Sória, almost leaving the club due to his poor results in that position. However, he was soon promoted to central defender and adapted well.

David Luiz made his Vitória debut in 2006, winning by a 2–2 draw against Santa Cruz in the Copa do Brasil that year. The club eventually promoted to the second division after finishing in eighth place in eight of the club's last critical nine games, scoring his first league goal on September 3, 2006 against Clube Atlético do Porto in the worst situation of its history, in the third division.

David Luiz joined Portuguese club Benfica as a substitute for Tottenham Hotspur-bound Richa (on loan). In a UEFA Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes, he made a tumultuous debut for the club, teaming compatriot Anderson in the center of defense, replacing the injured Luis's. Benfica lost the match 2–1 but advanced to the next round after winning 4–3 on aggregate.

David Luiz played his first league match for Benfica against Unio de Leiria on March 12, 2007. Following ten league appearances, he signed a five-year deal with the club at the end of the season. He scored his first goal for the club in the Guadiana Trophy friendly tournament against Sporting CP before the ensuing season. However, David Luiz's appearances in the league were limited due to injury, as Benfica finished fourth.

PSG beat Bastia 2–0 on August 16, partnering compatriot Marquinhos in central defense. David Luiz scored his first PSG goal on September 30th in the Champions League group stage, opening a 3–2 home victory over Barcelona. At the 2014 Ballon d'Or awards, he was named as a surprise inclusion in the FIFA World Team of the Year.

David Luiz scored his first Ligue 1 goal in a 4–2 victory over Evian on January 19, 2015. PSG defeated Stamford Bridge 2–2 on March 11, scoring on his return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League's round 16, excluding Chelsea, who lost the English club on away goals. He apologised for celebrating the achievement by claiming that it was motivated by sheer emotion rather than malice against his former employers.

Arsenal signed Chelsea's David Luiz from Chelsea for a reported £8 million transfer fee on August 8th. He was granted the number 23 shirt for the club. Arsenal defeated AFC Bournemouth 1–0 on October 6, 2019, he scored the match's winning goal, his first for Arsenal. He scored his second Arsenal goal in a 2–2 home draw against Crystal Palace. He was suspended after conceding a penalty in a match against former Chelsea in January 2020. Although Arsenal eventually drew the match, David Luiz received a three-match suspension from domestic play. In a Premier League match against Everton, he made his return to Arsenal, where he scored his first assist for the club.

He was involved in a serious head collision with Ral Jiménez at the Emirates Stadium, where Jiménez was knocked out on November 29, 2020. Jiménez was admitted to a London hospital and underwent surgery for his fractured skull, but David Luiz was only bandaged on the head as a result of a cut on his forehead. After the incident, he was allowed to play on, but at halftime, he was banned. International career

David Luiz competed with the Brazil under-20 team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007, losing the team in the round of 16.

Courtesy of his solid season with Benfica was first selected for the senior team in a 2–0 friendly win over the United States on August 10, the first match since Mano Menezes replaced Dunga as the head coach of the Seleço. The Portuguese Football Federation had considered calling him up to their own national team prior to making his Brazilian debut.

During Menezes' reign, David Luiz was included in every squad, and he was called up to the squad for the Copa América in 2011, but did not participate in the tournament due to injuries. He scored an own goal in a friendly against Mexico in October of that year, but the Seleço eventually won it 2–1.

David Luiz captained Brazil for the first time on September 7, 2012, when the team defeated South Africa 1–0 victory over So Paulo. In 2013, he was selected to represent Brazil in his native country. Brazil's fourth Confederations Cup title was won by David Luiz, along with teammate Thiago Silva. He made a superb goal-line clearance from Pedro's shot in the final against Spain.

David Luiz was selected in Brazil's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on June 2nd. In a 1–1 draw against Chile in the round of 16, he scored his first international goal. When the team won 3–2, he converted the team's first kick in the penalty shootout. In a 2–1 victory over Colombia in the quarter-finals, he scored the winning goal from a 35-yard free kick, and he celebrated the goal by running towards the corner flag and kicking it. David Luiz captained the Seleço in their 7–1 loss to Germany in the tournament's absence of Thiago Silva due to suspension. Brazil lost the third round play-off 3–0 against the Netherlands.

David Luiz was a member of Brazil's squad for the 2015 Copa América de Chile. Miranda partnered Miranda in central defense for the team's first two group matches before being dropped for Thiago Silva as Brazil was defeated by Paraguay in the quarterfinals.

David Luiz received his first red card in a 1–1 2018 World Cup qualifying draw with Argentina in Buenos Aires on November 13, 2015. David Luiz and Thiago Silva were among many senior players not selected for the squad that traveled to the Copa América Centenary in the United States in 2016.
