David L. Lawrence Life

David Leo Lawrence (June 18, 1889 – November 21, 1966) was an American politician who served as the 37th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1959 to 1963.

Lawrence is Pittsburgh's first Catholic mayor to have also been elected as Governor of Pennsylvania.

He served as mayor for four terms from 1946 to 1959.

Early life

Lawrence was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to a working-class Irish Catholic family. Lawrence instead worked as a clerk for Pittsburgh attorney William Brennan, chairman of the local Democratic Party and a labor activist pioneer. Brennan became a personal friend and mentor to the teen Lawrence.

Lawrence began selling insurance in 1916. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1918 to support the US effort in World War I, serving as an officer in the adjutant general's Washington, D.C. office.

Later life

Lawrence resigned from office in 1963 after being limited to one term under existing state law. He continued to work in Democratic politics and served in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations as Chairman of the President's Committee on Equal Opportunities in Housing.
