David Lindon Lammy (born 19 July 1972) is a British Labour Party politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tottenham Hotspur since 2000.

Early life and education

Lammy was born in Whittington Hospital in Archway, North London, on July 19th, 1972, to Guyanese parents David and Rosalind Lammy. Since his father left the family when Lammy was 12 years old, he and his four siblings were raised solely by his mother. Lammy discusses the importance of fathers and the need to assist them in order to be involved in their children's lives. He is the chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Fatherhood and has written about it.

Lammy grew up in Tottenham and attended Downhills Primary School before being granted an Inner London Education Authority choral scholarship at the age of 10. He taught at Peterborough Cathedral and The King's School, Peterborough. He studied at the School of Law, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, graduating with a 2:1. Lammy went back to Harvard University, where he became the first black Briton to attend Harvard Law School; after graduating in 1997, he studied for a Master of Laws degree. From 10am to 1 p.m., Lammy appears on LBC and hosts a weekly Sunday show.

Personal life

In 2005, Lammy married Nicola Green; the couple have two sons and a daughter. Lammy is a Christian. He is also a Tottenham Hotspur F.C. man. I am a fan. "African, African-Caribbean, British, English, a Londoner, and European," the singer claims. "I'm black, I'm English, I'm British, and I'm proud."

Out of the Ashes: The August 2011 revolts, which culminated in a book published in November 2011. In 2020, he released Tribes, his second book that delves into social identity and the desire for belonging.

On both the 2003 and 2020 lists, Lammy is ranked as one of the top Black Britons on both the 2003 and 2020 lists. He has regularly featured in the Powerlist as one of the most influential figures in the United Kingdom of African/African-Caribbean descent, including the most recent editions published in 2020 and 2021.

David Lammy Career

Political career

He was elected for Labour on the London-wide list of the London Assembly in 2000. When Bernie Grant died, Lammy was elected as the Labour candidate for Tottenham during the London election campaign. He was elected to the position in a by-election held on June 22, 2000. He was the youngest Member of Parliament (MP) in the house before 2004, when Sarah Teather was elected.

He was named by Prime Minister Tony Blair as Parliamentary Undersecretary of State in the Department of Health in 2002. Lammy was appointed by Blair in 2003 as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Constitutional Affairs, and as a member of the government, he approved authorization for Britain to invade Iraq in 2003. Blair named Lammy as Minister of Culture, Media, and Sport after the 2005 general election.

In June 2007, new Prime Minister Gordon Brown demoted Lammy to the rank of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills. He was promoted by Brown to Minister of State and was elected to the Privy Council in October 2008. Brown appointed Lammy as Minister of Higher Education in the new Department of Education, Innovation and Skills, in June 2009, as the Commons minister of State. He was in office until May 2010, when Labour lost the election.

A Labour Party leadership contest was announced after Labour lost the 2010 general election. During the election, Lammy nominated Diane Abbott, saying that he felt it was important to have a diverse field of candidates, but he also expressed his support for David Miliband. Following Ed Miliband's reelection, Lammy promised his full support but turned down a post in the Shadow Cabinet, citing a desire to address a variety of topics that would arise in his constituency due to the "huge reductions in the public services."

In 2010, Lammy was suggested that if he ran for Mayor of London in 2012. Lammy pledged his support for Ken Livingstone's bid to become Labour City's mayor, branding him "London's Mayor in waiting." Lammy took over Livingstone's selection committee chair. In 2014, Lammy declared that he was considering running to become Mayor of London in the 2016 election.

Following Labour's defeat in the 2015 general election, Lammy was one of 36 Labour MPs to nominate Jeremy Corbyn, whom he is a good friend of, as a candidate in the Labour leadership election of 2015.

Lammy declared on September 4, 2014, that he would run for the Labour nomination in the 2016 mayoral election. He obtained 9.4% of first preference votes and was fourth overall in the London Labour Party's selection process, behind Sadiq Khan, Tessa Jowell, and Diane Abbott.

He was fined £5,000 for initiating 35,629 automatic phone calls, urging people to support his mayoral campaign without first obtaining permission to contact the party leaders. Lammy apologised "unreservedly" for breaching the Privacy and Electronic Communication Acts. It was the first time a politician had been fined for authorizing nuisance calls.

In the 2020 Labour leadership and deputy leadership elections, Lammy supported Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner. After Starmer was elected Labour leader in April 2020, Lammy was named Shadow Secretary of State for Justice in the Shadow Cabinet.

In the November 2021 Shadow Cabinet reshuffle, Lammy was promoted to Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs.

In Washington, D.C., Lammy attended the 2022 Bilderberg conference.

An inquiry into him in August 2022 discovered that he had inadvertently breached the MPs' code of conduct. In a letter to Parliamentary Standards Commissioner Kathryn Stone, he apologised.

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 21, 2024
The balaclava-clad criminal seized the phone in a moment from his startled victim before racing away along a fashionable street near the centre of the capital. The brazen theft follows a series of similar crimes across the city which have prompted fears visitors will steer clear of London for fear of being the next targets. The latest incident happened in Albany Place in Marylebone, near Regents Park, with footage shared and going viral on X, formerly Twitter. The account uploading the clip captioned it with the words of warning: 'Keep your head on swivel when in London.'

'MPs are complaining, m'lud. Lammy has gone supersonic-pompous': QUENTIN LETTS watches MPs debate whether Lord Cameron should quizzed in the Commons

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 18, 2024
Lord Cameron, Foreign Secretary, was in Italy for a G7 foreign ministers' meeting. These meetings have to be held in sun-kissed resorts. It's a security requirement. Back in the House of Commons, MPs were complaining that the government had dead-batted a suggestion from the procedure committee. Its not entirely cerebral supremo Dame Karen Bradley had proposed that parliamentary convention be bent to allow his lordship to be quizzed at the bar of the Commons. The Government's response, not quite in full: 'You must be joking. Get stuffed.'
