David Fine Life

David Sylvan Fine (born March 18, 1952) was an American anti-Vietnam War protester who was one of four perpetrators of the Sterling Hall bombing on the University of Wisconsin–Madison's campus in an act of political resistance to the University's academic efforts on behalf of the US military.

The bomb destroyed the building, killing one person and injuring three others.

After the incident, Fine spent five and a half years as a criminal.

Early life and education

Fine was born in Wilmington, Delaware, the second of two children in a middle-class family. He attended the Wilmington Friends School, a private Quaker-run academy. He received a full academic scholarship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall of 1969. He was a reporter and editor at The Daily Cardinal's undergraduate newspaper, and he had a 3.75 grade point index in his freshman year, the only year he attended.

As a fugitive, capture, trial, and prison – life as a fugitive.

Fine was finally captured in San Rafael, California, on January 7, 1976. Rod Beaton, a University of Wisconsin roommate, formed a fundraising committee to help with Fine's legal defense after the detention.

Fine pleaded guilty to two felonies in federal district court on June 8, 1976: conspiracy and unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. On the same day, he pleaded guilty in Dane County Wisconsin Circuit Court to charges of property destruction and murder in the third degree for Robert Fassnacht's death.

He was sentenced to seven years in jail on the federal charges and received a suspended term in the state court of seven years; the two sentences were scheduled to run concurrently. Fine was paroled on August 15, 1979, and remained on parole for about three years.

Later life

He obtained a college degree from the University of Delaware and a J.D. after his release. At the University of Oregon, he obtained a degree. Fine was refused admission to the Bar in 1984 after passing the Oregon Bar exam on the grounds that "he had failed to demonstrate good moral character." Fine appealed the decision to the Supreme Court of Oregon, which upheld the ruling.

In the court's decision it was written:

Fine is married and works as a law clerk at Chernoff Vilhauer LLP in Portland, Oregon, as of October 2014.
