David Canary Career

Career

He didn't want to sign with the Broncos, he went to New York City to be an actor. He spent two years in the United States Army, where he participated in the All-Army Entertainment Contest in 1963. Canary left Los Angeles to continue his acting career after ending his service.

In the original production of Tennessee Williams' Clothes for a Summer Hotel, which starred Geraldine Page, Canary's most notable stage performance was on Broadway.

Canary came to international prominence in 1967 on the Western series Bonanza after a semi-regular appearance as Russ Gehring in the primetime serial Peyton Place. He appeared in the now-classic Western film Hombre, in which he was starring Paul Newman, Richard Boone, and Cameron Mitchell in 1967. Canary appeared on CBS's Gunsmoke's two-part episode "George McClaney" (a poor man who learned nitroglycerin) (S12E28-29), played bbster Frank Gusenberg (S12E28-29), and appeared on the short-lived CBS Western Dundee and the Culhane.

Leonard Nimoy and the creators of Star Trek obliged Herb Solow, Robert H. Justman, and Gene Roddenberry to compile a list of candidates for consideration for the role of Mr. Spock. Canary was one of these candidates as described in Solow and Justman's book Star Trek - The Inside Story.

Canary in Hombre was cast as the new ranch foreman, Candy Canaday, by David Dortort, the designer/producer of Bonanza. Canary was "the kind of kid who comes on and suddenly, there's nobody else on the screen," Dortort said. Canary resigned from Bonanza in June 1970 after a labor rift. After Dan Blocker's death in May 1972, he returned. Canary said he loved Bonanza, but not so much for filming in Nevada in 100° heat.

Canary appeared on Broadway with Colleen Dewhurst on Great Day in the Morning and with Geraldine Page in Tennessee Williams' Clothes for a Summer Hotel. He appeared in musical theatres including Kismet, Man Of La Mancha, and The Fantasticks, as well as dramatic performances in The Seagull and Macbeth. David's first daytime television appearance was on Search for Tomorrow, where he appeared in the short-term as Liza Walton's agent. Far Wind, a cult leader who took the hospital staff hostage and killed Melissa Dancy, was a short stint on The Doctors. (Dorian Lo Pinto). Steve Frame played Steve Frame on the soap opera Another World in 1981. The Steve/Alice/Rachel romantic triangle was unsatisfied, and he left the program in 1983 after his character was written off.

On New Year's Eve 1983, he appeared in All My Children in the role of Adam Chandler. Stuart, Adam's older brother, was also portrayed as Adam's meek twin brother, who most (including the audience) believed was Adam. Adam accidentally shot and killed Stuart while using prescription narcotics in May 2009. Canary was a student at the University of Canary and left All My Children in 2010; his last episode was taped in late March and aired on April 23, 2010. He said he planned to return to AMC on occasion. For several days before the ABC's end on September 23, 2011, he reprised both of his roles as Adam and Stuart Chandler. When the show began to produce online episodes in 2013, he returned to the role of Adam.

Law & Order, Touched by an Angel, S.W.A.T., Primus, Alias Smith and Jones, Police Story, Kung-Fu, Hawaii Five-O, Remember WENN, and Cimarron Strip are among his primetime television guest appearances. In the film Atomic Train, the actor appeared as the locomotive engineer. In a well-reviewed version of David Auburn's Proof in Canton, Ohio, near his hometown of Massillon, Robert in 2004.

Canary has been known to be the most affable and available to supporters of both All My Children and Bonanza. He did "meet and greet" appearances for AMC supporters at Disney parks, signing autographs for AMC followers. He appeared at several times at the Ponderosa ranch in Lake Tahoe, a tourist attraction that operated from 1967 to 2004. In 2002 for a PAX-TV special, he made his last appearance at the Ponderosa ranch in character. David was announced as replacing the ailing 90-year-old Jack Klugman in a limited-run production of Twelve Angry Men in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in March 2012.
