Life and career

Burns was born on Mott Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. He appeared in 1923 in Polly Preferred and then went to London with the 1924 Broadway show. Face the Music was his first musical performance in 1932, and Cole Porter's Nymph Errant (1933) was his London debut. Over a 50-year career, he appeared in numerous comedies and musicals.

In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1963), he received two Tony Awards for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

"It Takes a Woman" from Hello, Dolly (1964) as the original "Horace Vandergelder," Burns performed.

Mr. Solomon's role in the 1971 TV special (Hallmark Hall of Fame) earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor – Drama Series.

At Southwark Crown Court today, Paul Smith admitted to one count of attempting to arrange the commission of a child sex offence as well as two counts of promoting or assisting the commission of an offence. The 42-year-old believed he was communicating online with youth but was actually in contact with undercover investigators, who were using the pseudonyms Megan, Abby, and Elsie. Prosecutors also told the court that unlawful pictures were discovered on the defendant's computer when police searched his £900,000 house in Maida Vale in February 2022.
