Life and career

Burns was born on Mott Street in Chinatown, Manhattan. He appeared in 1923 in Polly Preferred and then went to London with the 1924 Broadway show. Face the Music was his first musical performance in 1932, and Cole Porter's Nymph Errant (1933) was his London debut. Over a 50-year career, he appeared in numerous comedies and musicals.

In A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1963), he received two Tony Awards for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.

"It Takes a Woman" from Hello, Dolly (1964) as the original "Horace Vandergelder," Burns performed.

Mr. Solomon's role in the 1971 TV special (Hallmark Hall of Fame) earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor – Drama Series.

The security guard who helped disarm an alleged knife attacker in Leicester Square has been recognised for his bravery at an official ceremony in London. Abdullah, 29, helped to disarm the accused attacker after the man allegedly stabbed a mother and her 11-year-old daughter with a steak knife at the London tourist spot on Monday at 11.34am. The shop security guard, who works at TWG Tea shop in the square, was one of those who tried to save the schoolgirl as she was allegedly stabbed eight times by the knifeman. The brave hero told the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) he 'heard a scream' before running towards the incident, after being the guest of honour at the Pakistan Independence Day event held by the High Commission on Wednesday. He told ABC: 'I would say that I'm a brave person. We Pakistanis are brave by heart. So I wasn't scared. I've never seen anything like it before, it was horrible.'

The victim, said to need plastic surgery, was allegedly put in a headlock by Ioan Pintaru, 32, who is accused of attacking her before being restrained by members of the public and arrested by police. The girl from New South Wales , was left with injuries to the face, shoulder, wrist and neck after the 'random attack' at the London tourist spot with her mother, 34, on Monday at 11.34am. Pintaru, of no fixed abode, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court yesterday charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article. He wore a grey prison-issue sweatshirt and the court heard he is a Romanian citizen.
