Darrell Eugene Armstrong (born June 22, 1968) is a retired American professional basketball player who competed for 14 seasons in the National Basketball Association.
He is now an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks, the NBA's top-ranked franchise who won the championship in the 2010-2011 season.
Early life
Armstrong was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, and he graduated from Ashbrook High School of Gastonia in 1986. Armstrong, a quarterback and wide receiver on the football team, debuted as a senior at Ashbrook, and he began playing basketball. Armstrong attended Fayetteville State University, a Division II college in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) convention, and he joined the football team as a walk-on placekicker. Armstrong played football for the 1986 and 1987 seasons, with twice kicking school-record 48-yard field goals. Armstrong joined the Fayetteville State basketball team in 1988 and spent three seasons under new head coach Jeff Capel II. Armstrong played 24 games from 1990-91, averaging of 16.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. Armstrong was the CIAA Slam Dunk champion in 1990 and 1991, and he was the first-team All-CIAA pick.
NBA career
Armstrong first signed with the Orlando Magic in late 1994–95, scoring in ten games of the regular season, including a spectacular one-handed reverse windmill dunk late in his second game against the Indiana Pacers in his second game. He played just 41 minutes in 13 games, totaling 42 points; despite his brief minutes, he competed in the 1996 Slam Dunk Contest. Since February, he had been inactive.
In his first full season on the roster in 1996-97, he played 67 games, averaging 6 points per game in 15 minutes off the bench. Armstrong received the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award and the NBA Most Improved Player Award in 1999, making him the first NBA player to win both awards simultaneously. Armstrong stole an inbounds pass and streaked to the other end of the court for a game-winning layup as time expired in 1999. He then became the Magic's starting point guard. He played in 1999-2000, averaging 16.2 ppg in 31 mpg.
In a 114-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on February 14, 2001, Armstrong scored 22 points and a career-high 16 assists.
The team never lost a single game in nine years in Orlando, despite being in the playoffs seven times.
Armstrong was arrested on July 7, 2003, after an incident outside an Orlando nightclub. He was then charged with resisting capture and assaulting a police officer, but the lawsuit was dismissed.
Armstrong signed with the New Orleans Hornets as a free agent during the 2003 offseason.
On December 3, 2004, the Hornets traded him to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Dan Dickau and a second-round draft pick. Armstrong was fined $1,000 for grabbing a microphone before a Mavericks game against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the American Airlines Center on December 19, 2005, yelling "How 'bout the Redskins?" The Cowboys were defeated by the Redskins 35–7 only a few hours before. Armstrong was raised in North Carolina as a Redskins fan.
After being in the NBA Finals with the Mavericks in 2006, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for guard Anthony Johnson. Armstrong was released by the Pacers on October 1, 2007.
Armstrong, who had been cut by the Pacers, has since signed with the New Jersey Nets after clearing waivers. In his last game of the season, he appeared in 50 games, averaging 2.5 ppg in 11.0 minutes, and buried three 3-pointers.
Coaching career
The Dallas Mavericks hired Armstrong to serve as assistant coach for player growth on January 26, 2009. Armstrong aided the Mavericks in winning the 2011 NBA Finals.
