Daniel Henry Thompson (born 4 April 1939) is an English multi-instrumentalist best known as a double bassist.
He has had a long musical career, including Richard Thompson and John Martyn. He was a founding member of Pentangle, a British folk-jazz band, for four years between 1964 and 1967.
He has released four solo albums since 1987.
In 1990, he converted to Islam.
Biography and career
Thompson was born in Teignmouth, Devon, England. His father, a miner, joined the Royal Navy at the start of World War II and was killed in combat whilst crewing submarines. Thompson was aged 6 when his family immigrated to London and was brought up in Battersea, a working-class neighborhood. He competed in football and was a junior for Chelsea, the team he has adored ever since. He learned guitar, mandolin, trumpet, and trombone while attending school before settling on the upright bass as his instrument of choice.
Thompson was a founding member of Pentangle's firstincarnation (1967–1973) and later versions and reunions. Thompson's debut solo album Whatever debuted in 1987 to critical acclaim.
Although Thompson has had his own album and tours, most notable of all of them have been a session musician contributing to other artists' albums and tours, such as with John Martyn and Richard Thompson (no relationship; e.g. From the Austin City Limits televised concerts, Mirror Blue, The Old Kit Bag, and the concert DVD release Richard Thompson Live in Austin Texas.
Danny Thompson lived in Clopton, Suffolk, with his partner Daphne and son Dan (Danny Junior, who went on to be the drummer with Hawkwind (1985–88)) in the late 1970s and 1980s. He worked closely with documentary film maker Roy Deverell and produced music for two of his award-winning films, Echo of the Wild and A Passion to Protect. The films are about John Aspinall's pioneering work with endangered mammals.
He converted Islam in 1990, adopting the Muslim name Hamza.
In five of the BBC/RTE Transatlantic Sessions, he appeared as a member of the 'house band' between 1995 and 2013.
