Early life
Daniel Mark Pudi was born in Chicago on March 10, 1979, the son of programmer and analyst Teresa (née Komendant) and Abraham L. Pudi (1955–2018). His parents immigrated to the United States and became naturalized citizens: his mother grew from Pokono, Poland, and his father was from a Telugu Christian family. With his mother and grandmother, Pudi learned Polish.
He grew up in Chicago's South Side with brother Adam and sister Katherine, but he attended Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, a northern suburb. In 2013, he delivered the commencement address at Notre Dame College Prep.
Pudi studied dance in Chicago and attended Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, earning a degree in communication and theatre in 2001. He was the first winner of the Chris Farley Scholarship at Marquette. The scholarship fund, rather than paying for a year of education, culminated in him appearing at an improv comedy festival starring Jim Breuer and Dave Chappelle, sparking his curiosity in studying improv. He appeared in summer stock theatre in Wisconsin, studied at The Second City in Chicago, and then joined Stir Friday Night!, a sketch comedy troupe of Asian-American performers. Steven Yeun is one of SFN's most notable alumni.
Personal life
Pudi is married to Bridget Showalter, who is a professional actor. They met while attending Marquette University in their freshman year. In January 2012, the twins, as a son and a daughter, were born. Pudi is also a marathoner, and has run many marathons.
Pudi bought a house in Pasadena, California, in 2014.
Career
Pudi began working for an executive search firm before heading to Los Angeles in 2005 to search television and film roles. His position, in which he worked remotely, enabled him to attend auditions, assisting him in avoiding the "struggling actor" part of waiting tables, temping, and so on. He appeared in many television pilots before joining the cast of Community, which he appeared in for six seasons from 2009 to 2015.
He has appeared in numerous television advertisements for Snickers, Verizon, McDonald's, T-Mobile, Pokémon, and Far Cry 4 as a performer. In 2012, he appeared on GSN's version of The Pyramid as a celebrity contestant, as well as fellow Community cast member Yvette Nicole Brown.
According to HitFix.com, he portrayed Arash in the comedy film Road Trip: Beer Pong, and appeared in the comedy horror film Knights of Badassdom, which was one of the highlights of Comic Con 2011. In "The Understanding," he appeared in a Jones Street Station music video. He has appeared in several internet movies, including BriTANICK's "A Monologue for Three," a cameo. Pudi appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the live broadcast of Hot in Cleveland, as well as a cameo in Star Trek Beyond.
Pudi appeared in the off-Broadway musical FOUND in the fall of 2014. He was the lead actor in The Tiger Hunter, Lena Khan's independent film directed in 2016 and funded by a Kickstarter campaign. In the DuckTales revival in 2017, Pudi began voicing Huey Ducks. In the same year, Teddy appeared on NBC sitcom Powerless as Teddy.
In the TV series Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet, which premiered in February 2020, Pudi plays Brad Bakshi. In August 2020, his theater performance for En Garde Arts' Uncommon Voices was on display. Running, a work in progress, explores his father's relationship with him, which impacted his personal identity, cultural background, and his encounter with bigotry throughout his personal life and career.
In the 2022 film Somebody I Used to Know, written by Brie, he reunited with Alison Brie.
