Early life

MacHale was born in Port Chester, New York, on March 11, 1955, and grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he worked on egg collecting, engraving sports trophies, and serving dishes in a steakhouse. He played football and ran track in high school. He and his classmates began making video films ranging from short documentaries to a long Marx Brothers comedy while attending Western Junior High School.

MacHale attended Villanova University for three semesters before transferring to New York University, where he earned a BFA in film production.
