Cuba Gooding Sr. (April 27, 1944-April 20, 2017) was an American singer.
He was the most popular lead singer of The Main Ingredient, replacing former lead singer Donald McPherson, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 1971.
Billboard notes that as the lead singer, he had five top ten hits, most notably "Everybody Plays the Fool" (1972), peaking at No. 71. 2 for three weeks, with peaking at No. 6. Billboard's all-genre Hot-100 list has three entries on it.
On Billboard charts, "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely" (1974), "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend" ("Rolling Down a Mountainside") were both top ten hits.
He also appeared as a solo artist with hits of his own.
Early life
Gooding, a native of Harlem, New York City, was the son of Dudley MacDonald Gooding (1890-1955) and his wife Addie Alston. The elder Gooding, a native of Barbados, immigrated to Cuba in 1936 and married a woman there. Dudley Gooding's first son Cuba was killed after she was killed due to his relationship with Pan African leader Marcus Garvey. When Cuba was 11 years old, his father died. In Manhattan, Gooding's father was a taxi driver.
Personal life and death
In the 1970s, Gooding went from the Bronx to southern California. Gooding and his partner, singer Shirley Gooding (née Sullivan), had four children: actors Cuba Gooding Jr., Omar Gooding, actress April Gooding, and singer Tommy Gooding. Gooding Sr. became a minor actor in his own right. In 1974, Gooding Sr. divorced his wife. The Goodings remarried in 1995.
In 2011, he had a residence in Rosarito Beach, Mexico, where he appeared at at least one charity concert. He was also a resident of Flagler Beach, Florida.
Gooding was discovered dead in his car on April 20, 2017, one week before his 73rd birthday. The fire department administered CPR, but the ambulance service was unable to revive him. He died as a result of natural causes, according to an autopsy.
He is laid to rest at the Trinity Church Cemetery in Manhattan.
Career
Gooding Sr. performed as a back-up vocalist for The Main Ingredient. After lead singer Donald McPherson died of leukemia in 1971, he became the lead singer. Stevie Wonder co-written several songs on the 1973 album Afrodisiac. Gooding left the Main Ingredient in 1977 or 1978; the first was titled The 1st Cuba Gooding Album. Brian Auger's "Happiness Is Just Around the Bend" in 1983, which has been sampled by several R&B singers, as well as a remix by UK Hardcore Rave company Altern-8 in 1991. Gooding returned to The Main Ingredient in 1980 and released two more albums for RCA Victor. Samples from the album also appeared in Bizarre Inc's collection "Playing With Knives" in 1991. In September 2007, Gooding unveiled "Politics" as a single. Everybody Plays the Fool: The Cuba Good News Story was also a film project by Hector. The film follows three generations of the Gooding Family, Dudley "Cuba" Gooding, Cuba Gooding Sr., Cuba Gooding Jr., and Omar Gooding.
It was announced on the Boat Trip DVD trivia page that he was going to appear in The Combat Temptations, a 2003 romance thriller starring his son Cuba Gooding Jr., but not in the film.
Gooding appeared on the Beach Music Super Collaboration CD, performing "Meant To Be In Love," by Charles Wallert. This led to the creation of the pair's "Never Give Up" (Bluewater Recordings), which debuted at the 2009 presidential inauguration.
