Career

Smulders' first acting role was as a guest in the Showtime science-fiction series Jeremiah; she went on television later, including a regular role on The L Word. In the short-lived ABC series Veritas: The Quest, she was the first actress to play a series regular. Smulders was cast as television reporter Robin Scherbatsky on CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2005 after Veritas' cancellation. The show ran for nine seasons, winning ten Emmy Awards. Smulders appeared on Love, Loss, and What I Wore at the Westside Theatre in June 2010.

In the 2012 film The Avengers, Smulders played Maria Hill. She underwent training from a Los Angeles SWAT team member to use weapons to portray the character. Smulders has since reprised his role in three episodes of S.H.I.L.D.'s television series Agents of S.M., and in the films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) (2019), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).

Smulders appeared in the romance film Safe Haven in 2013. She appeared in Delivery Man and They Came Together, a comedy-drama. In the 2014 animated film The Lego Movie, Smulders narrated a Lego version of Wonder Woman. It was the first time the Wonder Woman character appeared in a theatrical film. Smulders was reported to have left the made-for-TV film Confirmation because she had broken her leg, and Zoe Lister-Jones was later announced to replace her in the role of Harriet Grant.

She appeared in The Intervention and the action adventure film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2016 opposite Tom Cruise. In the Netflix series A Collection of Unfortunate Events, she played the recurring character "Mother" in 2017. In the main role of Lisa Turner, she appeared in the Netflix original series Friends from College from 2017 to 2019. In the ABC crime drama Stumptown premiered on September 25, 2019, she appeared as Dexedrine "Dex" Parios, a trauma-stricken military veteran and private detective.

In 2022, she reprised her role as Robin Charles Scherbatsky in the first season finale of the HIMYM spinoff "You're Everything."

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit a new low just one day after the star-studded premiere of Marvel's Secret Invasion. According to 42 reviews of the first two of the show's six episodes, Secret Invasion has now earned a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Although the score is not strictly 'Fresh' (films and TV shows must receive a percentage of positive reviews above 60% before being designated as 'Fresh' rather than 'Rotten'), it's still the lowest rating of any of Marvel's Disney Plus shows.
