Career
Smulders' first acting role was as a guest in the Showtime science-fiction series Jeremiah; she went on television later, including a regular role on The L Word. In the short-lived ABC series Veritas: The Quest, she was the first actress to play a series regular. Smulders was cast as television reporter Robin Scherbatsky on CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2005 after Veritas' cancellation. The show ran for nine seasons, winning ten Emmy Awards. Smulders appeared on Love, Loss, and What I Wore at the Westside Theatre in June 2010.
In the 2012 film The Avengers, Smulders played Maria Hill. She underwent training from a Los Angeles SWAT team member to use weapons to portray the character. Smulders has since reprised his role in three episodes of S.H.I.L.D.'s television series Agents of S.M., and in the films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) (2019), and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019).
