Christopher Larkin (inset with his daughter Hannah) performed French horn for the BBC Symphony Orchestra on a day in, not far away, for nearly four decades. During this period, the Maida Vale Studios in West London became like a second home to the company's hardworking father of three children. He sat to the left of the conductor and behind the string section, next to old ducts and vents that criss-crossed the 114-year building from 2015 until he retired in 2015. When playing for hours on end, he had no idea he was inhaling deadly asbestos dust. The tale of how the 73-year-old man died in 2021 to mesothelioma, a rare disease caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos is tragic but not entirely unique. Following the mesothelioma deaths of 11 former employees, BBC (Broadcasting House right) bosses have already paid out a staggering £1.64 million in damages. Adding her voice to the scandal engulfing the BBC is Dame Esther Rantzen (left with her That's Life team), who this week questioned whether her stage four lung cancer -which is a type not linked to smoking - might also have been caused by exposure to asbestos at the BBC's Lime Grove Studios in West London, where she filmed That's Life! For 21 years, I have been in charge of providing the service.
