Early life

His father, George, a newspaper press plant printer, was of Polish descent, and his grandparents spoke Polish as their first language; his mother Bonnie was a tutor. Christopher, Christ's older brother, was a strong influence, often bullying a teenage Christian, which in turn instilling a stern competitive drive. Both boys were also employed as farm employees to supplement their allowance.
Laettner attended the private Nichols School, but although he received a financial aid package that paid a large portion of his tuition, his family had to sacrifice to send him there, and he did janitorial work at the school to defray some of the costs. He scored over 2,000 points, breaking teammate Ron Torgalski's record, and the team gained two state titles and advanced to another semifinal. He was a highly coveted college recruit.
