Life and career
Makepeace was born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Doreen and Harry Makepeace. Tony Makepeace, his older brother, is a Canadian photographer.
In 1974 Canadian television special The Ottawa Valley, he began his acting career. His next role was in Meatballs, a 1979 Canadian comedy in which he portrayed a shy, loner teen attendee of a summer camp who has trouble fitting in. Makepeace's work in the film was a hit, grossing more than $43 million at the box office, and the actor got raves for his role in the film. He was then cast in the lead role in the Fox film My Bodyguard, which earned $22.5 million domestically in July 1980. Critic Roger Ebert wrote about Makepeace's role in the film, saying it was "one of the most involving teenage characters I've seen in the movies in a long time." In the 1981 film The Last Chase, Makepeace appeared alongside Lee Majors and Burgess Meredith. Makepeace's post-production film appearances included appearances in made-for-television films and a handful of other television films, including Mazes and Monsters with Tom Hanks, The Falcon and the Snowman in 1985 and 1986's Vamp.
Makepeace produced a spoken dialogue for the Kiss album Music From "The Elder" in 1981, but it was not used in the final mix; plans to convert the album into a feature film never materialized.
He hasn't appeared in any films since 2001, but rather worked behind the camera as an assistant director.
